- Reposted by Fernando P. LimaBy-The-Wind-Sailors Marazion was awash with thousands of Wind Sailors this afternoon, these Hydrozoa are free floating animals that live out to sea in vast numbers. They primarily feed on plankton and use nematocyst toxin to catch their prey, so do wash your hands afterwards if you pick them up.
- Reposted by Fernando P. LimaOxygen supersaturation has been reported to protect aquatic animals from heat waves. We tested this in a large collaborative experiment on many species of fish and crustaceans. Our new paper in @plosbiology.org shows that the effect of hyperoxia on thermal tolerance is negligible. Unfortunately.
- Have a look at our heart beat logging instrument featured in Methods in Ecology and Evolution blog!
- New blog post alert! 🚨 Read about a new tool to track stress of marine invertebrates with heartbeats 🐚 💓 @coastalwarming.bsky.social @fplima.bsky.social
- We’ve built an open-source system to automatically record and analyse heartbeats in mollusks and crustaceans, helping us understand how marine life copes with environmental stress. 💙 besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... @electricbluecrl.bsky.social @coastalwarming.bsky.social
- It is accompanied by an R package (#heartbeatr) now live on CRAN! 🫀 It automates heartbeat detection and quality control — turning what used to take months of manual work into just a few days. A game-changer for large-scale physiological studies. cran.r-project.org/package=hear...
- Reposted by Fernando P. LimaPossibly the most beautiful Sabellaria alveolata 🪱 reefs I have seen in Ireland 🇮🇪 Cullenstown beach, Co. Wexford. Just stunning 🤩. Duncannon - you have some competition! 💪 #Prograding @aec13.bsky.social @fplima.bsky.social @npwsireland.bsky.social

- New paper out in L&O Methods! We show that rock-embedded loggers enable accurate, long-term monitoring of intertidal substrate temperatures and are far more reliable than conventional loggers! doi.org/10.1002/lom3...
- Proud to announce our first R package, just published in CRAN! (cran.r-project.org/package=hear...). It streamlines heart rate analysis collected with the PULSE system, which we also developed and can be used to monitor the cardiac performance of mollusks and crustaceans (electricblue.eu/pulse).

- Today is bass clarinet day 🥰
- Climate change threatens even the tough ones. Our new study shows that even Ascophyllum nodosum, a tough brown seaweed, struggles with rapid temperature swings during low tides, and populations across Europe vary in their heat tolerance. Read more here: jecologyblog.com/2025/05/20/c...
- New paper out! 🌊 We show that southern populations of Fucus spp. are especially vulnerable to repeated low-tide heat stress — a key factor for their future under climate change. 👉 doi.org/10.1016/j.ma...

- Reposted by Fernando P. LimaAnd it’s a wrap! We presented a poster (awarded the 3rd prize), delivered 6 talks, 2 of them keynotes and had many scientific chats 😊🔬🥼 thank you #itrs2025 until next time! @fplima.bsky.social @manoanalu.bsky.social @catiamonteiro.bsky.social
- A few days ago Luís Pereira defended his PhD thesis in a memorable way. Congratulations Luís. We are very proud of you. @coastalwarming.bsky.social @electricbluecrl.bsky.social. @dansmale1.bsky.social and @trinebekkby.bsky.social were the main opponents. We had a great time!
- Spring tides in the Spring (pun intended) mean that our entire team is busy in the field. This past couple of days we were simultaneously working in Norway, Spain and several locations in Portugal. @coastalwarming.bsky.social
- Our most recently activity with the entire team: a safety training session on the field. We discussed communication, planning, prevention, emergency actions and equipment. It was a success!
- Some rocky shore biodiversity just to brighten the day

- US, what the actual hell is wrong with you?
- Reposted by Fernando P. LimaRight in front of our eyes, we’re seeing the destruction of the US, and the beginning of a dictatorship run by a career criminal & his enablers, drawn from the worst among us. Nobody seems to be taking effective action against this, while many calmly accept this fate like lambs led to the slaughter.
- Reposted by Fernando P. LimaThe tide is the lowest «ever». Air pressure and winds are on my side 🌕💨💪🏼The temp started at -9C, but now just -5C 🥵🥰 A perfect day in the intertidal rockweed beds, downloading temperature data and photographing plots for biodiv studies together with @catiamonteiro.bsky.social @fplima.bsky.social
- On the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a huge shout-out to my wife @sergiavelho.bsky.social, a brilliant scientist, a dedicated mum of three, and an inspiration. Here she is working in the lab while pregnant with our first daughter: a scene that repeated twice more!

LimaHoje é o Dia Internacional das Mulheres e Meninas na Ciência, o grupo CoastalWarming escolheu este dia tão especial para estrearmos a conta do nosso grupo aqui no #bluesky! ---- Today marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and we take this opportunity to start our account here!
- I never thought anyone would actually get into that bandwagon but here we are. This is a printscreen from Google maps.
- Apple Maps is still showing Gulf of Mexico though
- Look what showed up in front of one of our intertidal cameras. Yes, this is a section of the shore where you can walk during low tide 😀
- Today we finished the transplants of the algae we collected yesterday. Some were secured with specially designed 3D printed holders. Others grew on bricks that we transported and glued to the rock. Let’s see how they do in the next months.
- Still yesterday. In the 1st pic, some of us working in the field. On the 2nd pic, Gibbula magus, a species I had not seen in maybe 20 years.
- Exchanging algae among fieldwork teams in an underground parking in Vigo, Spain. Reciprocal transplants will inform us on responses of these algae to warming. We looked like we were smuggling drugs, though 😅
- For the past year João Nunes has been working with us and, today, he superbly defended his MSc thesis on the use of low cost drones for the systematic survey of intertidal communities. Congrats João!
- Reposted by Fernando P. LimaBlack moon, high pressure and off-shore winds = the lowest tide possible 💙 So I am out checking my 12 plots in the Oslofjord, looking at effects of heat 🥵 and cold 🥶 snaps on intertidal biodiversity, with or without seaweed coverage. A project with @fplima.bsky.social and his groups.
- Can anyone help identifying this parasitic isopod? Found on a recently beached dead fish in Porto Santo, Madeira, Portugal. The isopod was still alive.
- Out in Science Magazine, the collaborative project where Rui Seabra and I serve as co-PIs, in a piece by April Reese! Full story here: t.co/Mm8yqxNe4l Support from FLAD, FCT, National Geographic, and Lindblad Expeditions. Hosted at CIBIO/BIOPOLIS, UP. #EnvLoggers from @electricbluecrl.bsky.social
