- I agree, where I live only a small minority voted for them. Still, substantial shift in tone due to their influence.

- Again - don’t view this just from an American perspective. With 152 delegates comes a lot of voting power and money. Yes, they will not lead yet, but the trend is clear.

- Voted out makes it sound like they were in power before and rebuked by voters. The opposite happened. They are closer to power than before. The gains in the Bundestag are not meaningless.
- [Not loaded yet]
- Of course not. I live in the Rhineland. I voted yesterday. Funnily enough some relatives know Mr. Merz personally. The situation is not as simple as it might seem to you. AfD has clear majorities in the east. High turnout and they still gained. Merz moved strongly to the right.
- [Not loaded yet]
- They were not voted out. Yes, the protests occurred, but the AfD gained massively.

- This is a seriously good pun.
- Why is chance so bad, though? Randomness, haphazardness, isn’t that what makes life interesting?
- "Imagine a world in which an A.I. can analyze your reading patterns and alert you that you’re about to buy a book where there’s only a 10 percent chance you’ll get past Page 6..." Fuck off. That's not empowerment, that's outsourcing your soul. That's outsouling. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/25/o...

- Unclear for me why that is the case. Did Labour not do something they promised to do? Were expectations different?
- Maybe I should start to become a Swiftie!
- “Lebensraum: is it prudent fiscal policy?” 🤷♂️🤦♂️ Again, one thing I was completely wrong about is that I believed there was a baseline level of professional pride & integrity below which supposedly serious journalists would not sink in the face of the far right authoritarianism.
- But what to do if the citizens agreed - which they seem not to - ? Further: which past territorial expansions any county has done were acceptable? Probably almost none, right?

- It would be SO wonderful if this were true. What few people understand: there are those like me that care about the climate and wish they didn’t have to care. I like cars. I fly, a lot in some years. I enjoy looking at factories. I like to buy stuff. I’d love for all this to be unproblematic.

- This is super simplistic. There are also lots of people strongly against classic PR content.

- Sadly. But regarding the pictures of snow, climate change right now is something we can all see for ourselves. “With our own eyes”, you don’t need experts for that. Isn’t this the kind of expertise the populist right always wants? Stuff every citizen can see or “knows”?
- The real question though is, for you, where are the Alpine glaciers going and why are they going? Why is operating a ski slope no longer possible without a snow cannon in many places? What’s the problem there? phys.org/news/2025-01...

- There is certainly good research on this. Measuring temperatures is not terribly hard. You can start in your own garden.
- What I find so hard to understand - how can people say with a straight face: this is wrong? That it is not happening?

- Obviously not. Russia’s invasion is illegal. The referenda were unconstitutional and marred with fraud. But: not all such cases are bad. What about independence from colonial power? It is possible for a people to decide so.

- Why is self-determination imperialism? Should, and that would be the only way @curr.bsky.social or I might support such a move, the people of Greenland democratically wish to join the US, where is the imperialism in that?
- [Not loaded yet]
- You can. Curr says: “Respecting Greenland’s right to self-determination means respecting its citizens’ right to consider such an offer, which could be put to a referendum. For the choice to be free, Mr Trump would have to retract his threat of force.” This is possible under international law.

- (1) a rather calm article from the economist is not fascism (2) Greenland’s self-determination is not fascism. Its Danish for colonialist reasons (3) fascist feel pretty safe right now, if we look at my country, its neighbours or yours. (4) As a social liberal I obviously do not support fascism.

View full threadPatriarchy was and is obviously advantageous to some or many men, but not for society in general. Wars of aggression, territorial expansion are obviously advantageous to some leaders or their country, but not for the world and humanity.
- This is similar to how so much wealth is based on colonialism, on genocidal acts, on oppression and exploitation. In that sense, Trump/Putin are not so structurally different from those who buy cheap, however much the workers involved may suffer and who consume, whatever the fate of our climate.
- A re-discovery of how things were done in the past (= constant wars), when hate speech and oppression were just something people did (= ubiquitous violence). The people pushing this likely think they will come out on top. And this may be true!

That’s all.
