Royal Society Uni. Research Fellow @ the NHM. Thinking about genomes and evolution in meiofauna/flatworms. Climate action, ecosocialism, gay stuff. 🏳️🌈💚🌍🔬🪱 (he/him). Refugee from X...
- Reposted by Chris LaumerWell... community post confirms it: ONT is getting rid of P2 Solo, their most cost-effective platform. By transitioning to P2i-only and "contact for quotes" purchase models, ONT is now in the realm of the sequencing companies that they initially claimed to be distancing themselves from.

- Gender is for the individual to decide, not the state. If somebody tells you who they are, and your response is to ignore/question/investigate that identity, I don't know what to say to you. Gender is a matter of etiquette, of common decency, of positive regard for others.

- It's official - I'm organizing a field taxonomy workshop on freshwater and limno-terrestrial meiofauna! 27 August-11 Sept, in the Lake District. We have 13 experts covering all major taxa, advanced microscopy, DNA taxonomy, sci-com, publishing. RT! Send your best! www.nhm.ac.uk/our-science/...

- Taking the pulse of meiofauna research in 2025. My biggest take-home message as the head of one panel: evolutionary genomics is not (yet) anywhere near reaching its potential in this field, partly because of a lack of visibility/interdisciplinary education. www.nature.com/articles/s42...

- Together with Richard Unsworth at Swansea (@zosterar.bsky.social), we've cooked up a PhD project via the CROCUS DLA. Come do cutting-edge molecular ecology of meiofaunal communities in seagrass meadows in various states of "health". Deadline 20 January, please RT. blogs.reading.ac.uk/crocus-dla/c...

- Reposted by Chris LaumerToday we report that an engineered skin bacterium, swabbed gently on the head of a mouse, can unleash a potent antibody response against a pathogen. Could lead to topical vaccines that are applied in a cream. @djenetbousbaine.bsky.social led the charge... @natureportfolio.bsky.social 1/55
- Reposted by Chris LaumerA weird thing about an #ECR group leader in mid 2020s is that loads of grants are stuck at the same level for years, not accountin for the 20% inflation in the past few years. E.g. A max grant cap of £5000 in 2020 now only has £4000 worth of spending power in 2024. Ladder keeps getting pulled!
- Reposted by Chris LaumerWe have two open PhD positions in my group at @crg.eu. We are seeking candidates with a background in computational and/or molecular biology, and with a broad interest in evolutionary biology, gene regulation, and comparative genomics. 📅Apply before January 12 here: www.crg.eu/en/content/t...

- This is an incredible, chilling video essay from #notjustbikes which has totally changed how I think about self-driving cars. Something between documentary, journalism, polemic, and the coldly logical tradition of the best dystopian science fiction: youtu.be/040ejWnFkj0?...
