- 🌳🍒🫐It's a mast year! 🌳🍒🫐 There's a huge abundance of berries, nuts & seeds on UK trees/shrubs this year. Known as a mast year, certain species produce a bumper crop to increase seed survival, creating a 'prey satiation' effect. The overwhelming abundance ensures some will survive and germinate
- Ever seen what #freshwater #mussel babies look like? 👇🏼

- Releasing juvenile #freshwater pearl #mussels two channels today, less than 5 metres apart, one spring fed, the other a small side channel of the main stem river (surface water). The spring fed one was 12.5 ºC, the side channel 17.7ºC! That's over 5ºC difference in the space of <5m!
- Summer time, harvest time 😋
- What a wonderful day we had at the @freshwaterbio.bsky.social 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting at Nottingham Trent University. Brilliant discussions on ghost ponds, climate change, pollution, outdoor swimming, being 'activist scientist' and the concept of riverkin. Can't wait to do it again next year!
- Last 4 hours in our #GreenMatchFund campaign to help save #ArcticCharr in the #LakeDistrict. Please donate if you can or share our campaign with those who might donate.biggive.org/campaign/a05.... Would be great to reach 1/3 of our target of £6666. Thank you! #Windermere #freshwater #fish
- Great to see our Arctic charr recovery project gaining traction in the press. Until Tuesday 29th April you can donate to our Green Match fundraising campaign to double your donation donate.biggive.org/campaign/a05...
- Our new project with the FBA and others has hit BBC news! We are working together to investigate the status of the rare Arctic charr in Windermere: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... @freshwaterbio.bsky.social @ukceh.bsky.social 🐟 🧪

- We’re raising funds through the #GreenMatchFund for our #LakeDistrict #ArcticCharr Recovery and Management project, aka LD-CHARM 🐟 bit.ly/42BgnII If you can, please donate. Each donation is matched pound-for-pound up to £10K, meaning we could unlock £20K of funding for £10K of donations!
- Epic week at the #NaturalHistoryMuseum sampling #ArcticCharr scales for our #CHARM project. Investigating #genetics of English #LakeDistrict populations to aid #conservation. Funded by @naturalengland.bsky.social through #SpeciesRecoveryProgramme www.fba.org.uk/lake-distric...
- Next week we're taking part in the Green Match Fund to raise money for #conservation of Arctic #charr in the #LakeDistrict. Every donation up to £10k is doubled so please give if you can!

- Much fun with #ChatGPT making my own freshwater biologist action figure... Complete with mussels, notebook and traffic cone (bathyscope 🤪). Show me your action figures!
- Thrilled to have been awarded a @naturalengland.bsky.social #SpeciesRecoveryProgramme grant to investigate use and condition of #ArcticCharr spawning grounds and population genetics in the #LakeDistrict @freshwaterbio.bsky.social www.fba.org.uk/fba-voice/hu...

- Great article in the FBA's newsletter this month from Glen George about ancient names for #lakes and #rivers. They can tell us a lot about the historic #environment which may not hold true today, but which can provide important clues and inform #restoration. www.fba.org.uk/articles/anc...
- Literally from the car window! Nearly ran these two over. Interrupted a sparrowhawk attempting to make a woodcock its dinner 😱 Spoiler...the woodcock got away
- Stunning day on the #RiverLaxford seeing amazing habitats, mussels, lichens and even sea eagles 😱😍🦅 what a stunning part of the world! Thanks to Chris Conroy from Atlantic Salmon Trust for explaining the amazing work he's doing and answering my many fishy questions 🐟
- Reposted by Louise LavictoireA tale of two headlines based on the same press release. The reality, of course, is that the National Trust’s nature restoration efforts will bolster good farming, by “improving the health of enough soil to provide habitat for 1 billion earthworms.”
- Just wow! Amazing photo from #ThomaszWilk of an #endangered thick shelled river mussel #UnioCrassus spurting (nice!) to allow their larvae (glochidia) to find a #fish host #WildlifePhotographerOfTheYear #nhm_wpy www.instagram.com/tomaszwilkph... www.nhm.ac.uk/wpy/gallery/...

- Reposted by Louise LavictoireGravel is the unsung hero of healthy rivers. I think it is (almost) as important for river wildlife as the water that flows over the top. The sediments, pebbles rocks and stones are vital to healthy rivers but they are also under threat. Read on to find out why 👇
