- Another excellent @99pi.org episode on my favorite punctuation mark—the Em dash. If you get an email from me *without* an Em dash—that’s how you know it’s fake. 99percentinvisible.org/episode/658-...

- Submitted an R01 yesterday with a colleague. I spent 70 hrs on it & I bet she spent as much time or more. =140 hrs of faculty time. I'm not even complaining! If we are lucky enough to get this, it's a lot of $ and responsibility. But the grant churn can be grueling.
- So the update from the train derailment is that there is no evidence of propane leakage yet, but some leaks in tanks holding "food grade animal fat." I hope all of those health benefits of beef tallow are real! www.wfsb.com/2026/02/05/t...

- Reposted by Emily Myers🧠 Not all brain age algorithms are equal! In our new study, one algorithm (Pyment) outperformed other models in youth. Algorithms fail when your sample's age range is narrow or mismatched with training data. So, choose wisely... onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... #BrainAge #Neuroimaging
- Irritated to report that we have found the temperature at which the heating system can’t compete with the cold.
- Reposted by Emily MyersIf I were a blue state governor, I’d be looking into adding a bunch of tenure lines at my state schools. I know that seems like “kick ‘em when they’re down,” but it’s more like “let academics who can escape to where they can do real work.” Builds up your own schools AND protect US academic output.
- Djuna Barnes, Django Reinhardt… was there a trend for Dj- names at the turn of the last century? Can anybody think of another?? Obviously there’s nothing more important to discuss today… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djuna_B...

- One question on my mind is whether fellowships will now allow BESH-type studies. For a bit pretty much any "learning" or "training" study was out of bounds for F31s/F32s b/c they were classified as clinical trials.
- This is good news for NIH-funded behavioral scientists and for the public; it resolves an unfortunate Catch-22 situation that inflated administrative burden and occasionally excluded basic behavioral science from funding opportunities: grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...
