Molecular microbiology (Corynebacterium, Listeria), live biosensors and biotechnology of bacteriocins and other fancy peptides @ Ulm University
- Day out with the group. First stop at the Museum für Brot und Kunst to see its current exhibition „Winzige Giganten“ (tiny giants) which includes pieces created by our very own PhD student Karo introducing our work on the impact of fertilization on the soil microbiome (project IMPALA)
- As announced a few days ago, Rostand's first paper was accepted in Environmental Microbiology Reports. The paper is now online. Here is the link: enviromicro-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... Huge thanks to the Baden-Württemberg Foundation for funding.
- Also today: I realized that we are at 993 followers. C'mon bluesky, get us over the hump to make it 1000.
- Excellent day. Our very own PhD student Rostand successfully defended his thesis on the impact of organic fertilization on the soil microbiome of grassland ecosystems. Congratulations Rostand, well done.
- Finally out: the first paper of our #IMPALA project on the impact of organic fertilization on microbiomes in grassland ecosystems. Here we analyse 16S amplicons. Soon to come #bacteriocin gene clusters in metagenomes of the same samples academic.oup.com/ismecommun/a...
- Great meeting today at Bielefeld University to discuss progress and next steps in WP1 of our EU project #iCulture on production of antimicrobial peptides using biomass of marine macroalgae and the German microbe of the year C. glutamicum

- So true. And if you want to hear how we try to produce #bacteriocins and other antimicrobial/antiviral peptides using a biotech workhorse organism, come to my talk tomorrow at 11:30h in the Biotechniology for Health Session (Amber 1&2 hall) of #FEMS2025. Or to Poster 395.16P on Thursday.
- Ready, set, go for the opening plenary session of #FEMS2025
- Bacteriocins.bsky.social will be attending #FEMS2025. Found out yesterday that my abstract was selected for a talk and poster 😱. All Emails were moved to Spam for some reason 🤯. Will do my best to give a convincing presentation on recombinant production of #bacteriocins

- Question in the recent microbiology exam: What does the abbreviation „LUCA“ stand for? Answer of one of the students: „last useless common ancestor“ 🤷♂️
- Once again my old love bifidobacteria prove to be important for proper development of the immune system and may help against reduced vaccine responses indiced by antibiotics www.nature.com/articles/s41...
- Great work be the @delafuentelab.bsky.social using Andersonin-D1, an antimicrobial peptide of a frog, as basis to generate potent synthetic peptide antimicrobials by structure-guided design www.cell.com/trends/biote...

- Here’s to all the ladies in science out there and in my lab. You run the show. www.un.org/en/observanc...
- The system described in 1962 in Aequorea victoria by Osamo Shimomura to start the success of GFP as the most widely used reporter - now put together by synthetic biology to give a set of 20 colours. Amazing.

- Our favorite biotech workhorse C. glutamicum has been named microbe of the year by the VAAM🎉. But it is not amongst the 50 most studied bacteria in literature 🥺. Still a lot of work to be done. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

- Our EU project iCULTURE is on BBC!!!! Of course, we are not trying to producing classical antibiotics but #bacteriocins and other antimicrobial peptides to start with. But once this is achieved, anything is possible. www.bbc.com/reel/video/p...
- Reposted by @bacteriocins.bsky.socialSo happy our pre-print on daptomycin mechanism of action is now out! Here, we present three main findings: i) daptomycin does not form large membrane pores in either B. subtilis or S. aureus, (1/3)

- And now it‘s time for a few days with family and friends
- 2024 ends with excellent news for the bacteriocins bunch: our very own PhD student Julia won a 15000€ grant to support her first own project. So first things first: important investment in pink gloves for all the ladies in the lab
- vaam.de/en/microbiol... Yessss, a well deserved honor this versatile bacterium. C. glutamicum is quite possibly one of the coolest bacteria in biotechnology.

- Reposted by @bacteriocins.bsky.socialToday we report that an engineered skin bacterium, swabbed gently on the head of a mouse, can unleash a potent antibody response against a pathogen. Could lead to topical vaccines that are applied in a cream. @djenetbousbaine.bsky.social led the charge... @natureportfolio.bsky.social 1/55
- Christmas cookie production has become a tradition of the group. Today in combination with degustation of the recent craft brew of the group
- ByeBye Twitter/X. Too many obsessed, inked goddesses and kinky bitches looking for a night of passion and too much advertisement for crap I don’t need on X. So I left for good. Hello again on the new blue place. Good to be here now.

- Reposted by @bacteriocins.bsky.socialSome people envision that biology will become engineering. We will all be using robots to screen millions of computer-generated molecules. If science stops being about playing, breaking things, brainstorming, and chance favoring the prepared mind, I think no one will want to do it. It won't be fun.
- Excellent opportunity for a motivated PhD candidate with expertise in microbiology and molecular biology on a project on bacterial dormancy, toxin-antitoxin systems, stress resilience and synthetic biology in the group of B. Berkhoff @UlmUniversity. stellenangebote.uni-ulm.de/jobposting/d...
