- 🚨 New preprint alert 🚨 I’m excited to share our study presenting a non-invasive method for sexing sea turtle hatchlings via DNA methylation - the culmination of many years of work! Huge thanks to our fantastic co-authors, whose dedication made this possible doi.org/10.64898/202...
- Sea turtle sex is determined by incubation temperature 🌡️ Under climate change, populations are often modelled to become 100% female by 2100, risking demographic collapse. However, these projections have mostly relied on indirect proxies of hatchling sex ratio, raising questions about their realism
- We combined controlled laboratory and field experiments at the world’s largest loggerhead turtle rookeries, with 2 key results: (1) 🔬 DNA methylation provides a reliable, non-lethal way to identifying hatchling sex, avoiding invasive or destructive approaches that currently dominate the field.
