- Ireland's Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence published its interim report yesterday. The Committee makes a number of recommendations, which include: 1. "Ireland must not shy away from the EU #AI Act or try to dilute it... www.oireachtas.ie/en/press-cen...
- ... We should treat it [#AIAct] as a minimum baseline for national AI regulation, not a maximum standard." @iccl.bsky.social
- 2. Involvement of people affected by AI: "establishing a Citizens’ Assembly on Artificial Intelligence Digitalisation and Technology to facilitate inclusive public dialogue and democratic input on AI policy and ethics." www.iccl.ie/news/submiss...

- Very disappointing that ACM using AI summaries that are highly likely to lead readers astray. We can expect more research papers misrepresenting other papers. We can thank AI summaries for that.
- From the excellent @fotoole.bsky.social "Now, as then, the world’s largest superpower has fused its interests with those of pusher cartels – for the opium lords of 1839, think the tech bros of 2025."
- "For opium, think algorithms designed to get children hooked on poisonous images delivered straight into their developing brains. And for China then, think the EU now."
- "The EU’s rather timid and belated attempts to limit the damage inflicted by the social media oligarchs are not the only reason for Trumpworld’s determination to take it down. Climate change (and the threat to America’s vast fossil fuel industries from the EU’s green agenda) has to be factored in."
- "One of the front lines in the Algorithm Wars is Ireland. Meta, TikTok, YouTube, X and Snapchat all have international bases here. Meta alone ran €85 billion worth of revenue through its Dublin HQ last year... Meta’s corporation tax payment of €367 million."
- Our investigation into Irish Department of Justice use of chatbots. The department hides behind disclaimers while deploying misleading chatbots. @iccl.bsky.social @abeba.bsky.social @johnnyryan.bsky.social www.iccl.ie/news/irish-d...
- And the department is not immune to the #AIHype. One of the documents received through FOI requests makes this claim: “Copilot doesn’t just connect ChatGPT with Microsoft 365,” but it “turn[s] your words into the most powerful productivity tool on the planet.”
- The bottom of the article has some of the errors. As @wendylyon.bsky.social who identified these errors emphasises, these are only a selection of errors. bsky.app/profile/wend...

- Reposted by Kris ShrishakI fully endorse this. Political leaders are falling prey to AI hype, and seem to lack any kind of help from reputable sources who could counter the false claims of tech CEOs. Where are their science advisers???
- In a short piece for @techpolicypress.bsky.social, @abeba.bsky.social and I write #AIHype Is Steering EU Policy Off Course. Stop peddling in unscientific discourse about “AGI” and “superintelligence.” Serve citizens. Don't cater to the whims of tech CEOs. www.techpolicy.press/ai-hype-is-s...

- The European Commission uses ChatGPT outputs in public documents. @iccl.bsky.social has filed a complaint to the European Ombudsman as this use likely violates Commission's own guidelines and its obligation under EU treaties www.iccl.ie/news/europea...
- Public bodies should always be transparent and disclose if a generative AI tool is used in any public document, even if the output from such tools has been assessed by their staff. In such a disclosure, specific details about the tools should also be mentioned for transparency.

- Citizens already face AI harms: discrimination, privacy-violations, psychological and environmental harms. Instead of effectively addressing these harms and stopping companies from exploiting workers and stealing creative work, the President is promoting AI hype that serves these companies.
- Leaders of EU institutions have a responsibility to citizens. By promoting AI hype in the midst of a dangerous #bubble, the European Commission risks proposing harmful policies, wasting public funds and being complicit in AI harms.

- Old excuse: there is too much training data so they cannot know what is in there New excuse: training data does not tell them about the model behaviour so they don't care Real excuse: It takes care and effort to curate and understand the data; Doing so will expose the snake oil salesmen of GenAI
