one of the things I genuinely struggle to understand: if you have more money than you could possibly spend in several lifetimes—meaning there is no financial pressure to do or not do anything—why would you do things that make so maybe people decry your behavior and mourn your very existence?

So many people who have the financial might to garner merited admiration instead court disgust and I just don't get it!
