- I was surprised and grateful to learn that the first (and a splendid) review of JAPAN AT WAR, 1914-1952, came out in the Chinese edition of The Economist. Yay! mp.weixin.qq.com/s/fN2gNtcsxb...

- This article is definitely worth your time.
- I’ve gifted all of you this article, because I really think it is essential reading for understanding what is going on with the US government right now. I sincerely hope that we can all agree that incompetence and corruption is unacceptable and leads to worse. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

- At the Nagoya Army Preparatory School in 1901, students from Ishikawa and Aichi Prefectures got into a fight over failure to give the proper greeting. One student was stabbed twice with a knife in the back of the head... For not giving a proper greeting? 😱 Both were expelled from the school
- Apparently the Nagoya army preparatory school could be a brutal place. In May 1910, after the evening roll call, 48 3rd year students began punching (beating up?) pretty much every second year student in the schoolyard and study rooms.
- All 48 students were reprimanded and given a week (a whole week!) of self-study. I guess that's essentially a week of detention?
