In a new paper just published in PNAS Nexus, this is what we did: academic.oup.com/pnasnexus/ar... Short version: It didn't really work.
- Reposted by Laura SchererI have written many healthcare stories, but never before have I written about my own health. I decided to do so after learning one of my drugs costs nearly $1,000 a pill and just 25 cents to make. What I found was an incredible story of discovery and exploitation. www.propublica.org/article/revl...
- In a faculty meeting yesterday I learned that the cost of hospital materials has already gone up due to Trump China tariffs.

- New at Can We Still Govern: An anonymous NIH employee maps out the GOP budget gameplan to permanently gut our most important science agency. Impoundment, delay and red tape will create artificial "savings" that become the new benchmark for NIH budgets. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-nih-bu...
- Reposted by Laura SchererCan confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale
- NSF has posted an “update on priorities.” They’re canceling all “DEI and misinformation/disinformation” grants. And the guidance on how to fulfill the longstanding, legally mandated Broadening Participation requirement is utterly incoherent. www.nsf.gov/updates-on-p...

- Our latest study in BMJ Open examined how women react to learning about overdiagnosis in breast cancer screening. We found that preexisting beliefs about cancer made it hard for some women to comprehend and accept overdiagnosis bmjopen.bmj.com/content/15/3/e087997

- NIH is axing research on mRNA vaccines. But on Jan 22 Trump announced a huge investment with Larry Ellison to develop mRNA cancer vaccines. So mRNA for cancer=good, mRNA for infectious disease=bad. Totally makes sense... www.science.org/content/arti... www.foxbusiness.com/markets/trum...
- This is an important article. Far more money and resources goes to specialists than primary care. But when you think about your doctor, the medical expert you trust and see the most, they’re probably a primary care doc.

- The thing about foundation grants only allowing a 10-15% indirect rate is that universities lose $$ supporting those grants. How can universities afford to do that? I don't do the budgets, but I imagine it's supported primarily by NIH indirects. www.npr.org/2025/02/12/n...

- NIH is the largest funding source for independent biomedical science in the world. I've noticed some folks seem to think this is cutting funding to "Big Pharma". No, this change is directly attacking your only ALTERNATIVE to big pharma.

- Key finding here is that reduced trust was associated with perceiving conflict between the evidence and past screening messages. Implication is that we should engage *more consistent evidence based messaging*
- I related to a lot of this as an NIH funded researcher. There are so many things we need to do to reform science and how it's funded. But sledgehammering the whole system is not going to have the desired effects undark.org/2025/02/06/o...
- I frequently hear that Americans don't want medical research to be controlled by "big pharma". It's unclear whether the American people also understand that the #1 source of funding for independent research is the NIH

- My heart goes out to everyone who lost their home in the LA fires. And I have special empathy for people whose home was spared in the middle of blocks and blocks of ruin. This was our situation after the Marshall fire. If this is you, I'm happy to offer perspective and guidance.
- The Marshall fire in Colorado was the most destructive in the state’s history, burning 6,000 acres, ~1,000 structures and costing an estimated $2 billion. It was horrific and traumatic. By contrast, the fires in LA have burned >36,000 acres and an estimated 13,000 structures. It boggles the mind
