- The Village East by Angelika on 2nd Avenue & 12th Street has a slate of (mostly) Oscar nominees on view. And seats for four of them — "Blue Moon," "One Battle After Another," "Sinners" and "Bugonia" — are $5 during all screenings. (The screening times vary for these throughout the coming week.)
- The Sunshine Cinema closed on this day in Jan. 2018 after 17 years. Landmark reportedly had the opportunity to buy the property but decided against it after the local Community Board voted down an application for a liquor license in 2012 for pre- and post-movie drinks & dinner. 1/2

- The East Village is remembering Stella Soltowska of Ray’s Candy Store (113 Avenue A). Stella, who worked at Ray’s for nearly 50 years, died last week at age 80. A memorial has formed outside the shop. Friends note the best way to help is to stop by and support the store. 📷 @staciejoy.bsky.social

- Here's Tompkins Square Park in the light snowfall this morning. Hopefully, some of the snow will stick around for the 34th annual tree lighting here today (Dec. 14) from 4-5 p.m. — an excellent East Village tradition.
- As seen today (Dec. 10) in the East Village... when someone decided to discard last year's Christmas tree. Or, from the look of it, their tree from 2023.

- For the 1st time, Streecha Ukrainian Kitchen has a menu posted outside its basement spot at 33 E. 7th St. in the East Village. - The Charlie Parker Residence at 151 Ave B in the East Village is back on the market with a $7.2M ask. The landmarked 1849 townhouse, where Parker lived 1951–54, includes 4 full-floor apartments (plus a penthouse with a private deck) facing Tomkins Square Park. It was last listed in 2015 for $9.25M.

- A few details -- the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade is back this fall, marking its 35th year in the East Village on Sunday, Oct. 19, from 1-4 p.m. This year's event will feature a parade along Avenue B and a limited-entry costume competition.

- The annual Anarchist Bookfair takes place today (Sept. 13) from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at La Plaza Cultural on the SW corner of Ninth Street and Avenue C in the East Village. There are other related events today held at other East Village community gardens.

- REALLY enjoyed seeing "Jaws" again on a big screen for its 50th (!!!!) anniversary re-release this weekend. Picked the closest theater to my apt — Village East by Angelika on 2nd Avenue. Saw an afternoon screening, and the crowd was into it. Not a wasted moment in the film 🦈

- Went to 'Desperately Seeking Susan' (Rosanna Arquette, Madonna, Aidan Quinn) at Metrograph on the Lower East Side on Monday night. (The 40th anniversary?!) Have seen it before, but it's always a blast to experience it in a full auditorium. People were really into it. The film holds up well.
- Last night, Austin Butler, his 'Caught Stealing' co-star Zoë Kravitz & director Darren Aronofsky stopped by the Double Down in the East Village to celebrate the actor's bday. The cake was a lifelike version of Tonic the cat, the feline who plays Bud in the film, out 8/29. 📷 @staciejoy.bsky.social
- Photos today outside 57 Great Jones St. Jean-Michel Basquiat lived and worked here from 1983 until his death on this day (Aug. 12) in 1988. There's also a new message from his former collaborator, Al Diaz (SAMO©). Plus: the commemorative plaque keeps getting painted over. Address now: Atelier Jolie.
- The two-day Show Brain music festival is this weekend — Aug. 9-10 in Tompkins Square Park. A stacked lineup for these free, all-ages shows... more bands TBD on Sunday.
