- First time ever that cryptic species in seagrasses were identified going full population genomics in NW Pacific Nanozostera japonica. In a secondary contact zone, triploid F1 hybrids were found among the two putative species, but no higher order hybrids, suggesting genomic incompatibility

- Ever heard about “phantom recoveries” and “overfishing ratchets” ? These explain why still so many fish stocks are in a bad shape in European waters despite binding goals of the EU fisheries policy. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
- Total catches in western #Baltic Sea crashed 2002 -2022. Note that under an ecosystem-based management (EBFM), catches could be much higher. Much lower catches are currently not sustainable because stock sizes of cod, herring and sprat were depleted by ongoing overfishing.

- My good news of the week. Kiel Fjord directly located within a medium sized German city at the Baltic Sea is regreening itself. Eelgrass now found at 3.6 m and expanding after it had been completely absent in the 1990s. Thanks GEOMAR Seagrass team for scouting in the chilly Baltic Sea.
