- Many Trump voters wanted state violence and shows of bigoted cruelty in service of making the US whiter. But other Trump voters bought a fantasy of stopping criminals. As @gregsargent.bsky.social shows, seeing this in reality—eg building concentration camps—they don’t like it. That’s a big wedge.
- Remarkable: Trump's planned migrant prison camps are hitting deep resistance in red areas. In Virginia's partly rural Hanover (+26 Trump) opposition is intense. GOP leaders in other states are opposed. Voters are rejecting mass deportations big time. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/2060...
- Serious question for any MAGA knowers: When they held up the "Mass Deportation Now" signs, what did they think was going to happen?
- My family thought that they were going to deport criminals, that there was a large population of these criminals and that anybody else that "shouldn't be here" would self-deport. they connected Trump's peace efforts and anti-gang stuff with fixing the countries so that they wouldn't immigrate here.
- That makes sense: I guess enough Fox viewing would convince many people that the streets of everywhere except their home village are absolutely wall-to-wall criminals.Feb 4, 2026 14:36
