- I was very fortunate to fly out to Salt Lake City last week and attend the Utah Historical Society’s glamorous awards banquet held in the amazing Hill Aerospace Museum, where my book AMERICAN ZION was recognized as a finalist for their Best Book in Utah History. A true honor.
- So glad Bezos was able to afford the $75mil spent on the Melania documentary.

- I love that the Melania documentary proved once and for all that documentaries can be successful at the box office, and all you need to make $8mil in ticket sales is spend $35mil in marketing. A true lesson for us all.
- Reposted by Benjamin ParkI may have a stroke. Someone said protests don’t belong in church and it took every ounce of self-censure within me not to say “Deborah you are literally a Protestant.” A PROTESTant. I assume they think Luther was nailing Bed, Bath, & Beyond coupons to the door.

- Finally watched Testament of Ann Lee this week. Still thinking about it. What a phenomenal meditation on religion, creative use of texts and music, and moving choreography. Not to mention Amanda Seyfried’s amazing performance. Will be going again this weekend.

- I love how everyone in NFL media insists you need an elite QB and yet we were so close to having a Jarrett Stidham/Sam Darnold Super Bowl.
- I swear to god if New England and their second-year QB wins this game with a bullshit ref call that’s aided by horrible weather then we’re gonna need a formal and intensive investigation.

- Distracting myself from the horrors of a fascist state and the chill of a winter storm by trying to finish a book manuscript and watching sportsball.
- Not only does the video evidence make clear that the gun was removed, but the agent who took the first shot was looking right at it and therefore knew he was disarmed when he commenced the execution.
- Federal agents in Minneapolis wrestled Alex Pretti to the ground and secured the handgun he was carrying moments before shooting him multiple times, according to a Washington Post analysis of video footage. Read more: wapo.st/4qGOx8M
- Woke up to no power, but thankfully it’s been restored. Hopefully that’s the last outage. Best of luck to everyone facing today’s cold plunge. Also, abolish ICE.

- It’s incredible how the “Our Second Amendment Is Our Protection Against Tyranny” crowd is now like, “hey when you are protesting the government it’s not polite to bring a gun.”
- Reposted by Benjamin ParkAlex Pretti was a colleague at the VA. We hired him to recruit for our trial. He became an ICU nurse- I lover working with him. He was a good kind person who lived to help and these fuckers executed him. White. Hot. Rage.
- A masked militia claiming absolute immunity is storming homes, separating families, deporting children, detaining protestors, terrorizing communities, and executing bystanders. This isn’t a nuanced issue.
- Abolish ICE. Not reform. Not train. And certainly not fund. Abolish.
- This year we commentate casting out an invading army and it’s time to do it again.
- Absolute rage.
- There’s video floating around. You don’t want to watch it. News feed will be updated continuously. No paywall. www.startribune.com/ice-raids-mi...
- The big freeze doesn’t hit us until tomorrow, but I’m an old man with wrecked joints so my knees are already in immense pain with the weather’s pressure change.

- I’m really excited for tonight’s Mormon History Association roundtable on gender and sexuality within the Mormon studies field. It’s gonna be great. And it’s FREE!
- Reposted by Benjamin ParkI am pleased to learn that my forthcoming book is now listed on bookshop dot org, and there’s a nice little discount! Nice if you want to avoid the evil empire (the website not Man United) bookshop.org/p/books/whit...
- In a world of never-ending horrors, it’s somewhat refreshing to know the old-school Birch Society nonsense still exists, especially when they’re pushing it on…checks notes…Elmo.

- It’s honestly unfair given the Bears are the first American football team to have a pope rooting for them. No way that Hail Mary was gonna fail.

- That was the best forty-five-yard pass for a twelve-yard touchdown I’ve ever seen.

- Reposted by Benjamin ParkI can't say this loudly enough: THEY ARE TRYING TO NORMALIZE THE KILLING OF CIVILIANS FOR PARTICIPATING IN FIRST AMENDMENT PROTECTED PROTEST ACTIVITIES.
- Last night I was privileged to receive the @aschurchhistory.bsky.social’s Philip Schaff Prize, which is given to “the best book in the history of Christianity.” It’s an award that I still don’t think I deserve, but one for which I am deeply grateful. ASCH is one of my favorite scholarly orgs. /1
- I felt better about the award when Grant Wacker wisely noted that it’s also a reflection of the decades of labor by Mormon history scholars to integrate the LDS story into wider narratives of US religion. So I’m proud to accept the award on behalf of the community I love so much. Go team! /fin

- There are few texts I enjoy dissecting with students more than COMMON SENSE. So, happy 250th birthday to that book later this week. Here's some fun digging into when it actually appeared.
