- Reposted by Block PartySame, i have a sophisticated and wealthy client who lost $500k in a fake real estate deal where there were five or six people on the other side of the transaction pretending to be real estate agents, lawyers, court clerks etc.- NOBODY is prepared to be personally targeted in that way.

- Reposted by Block Partyngl my first reaction upon discovering our intern had fallen for a gift card scam in her first week (an impersonation attack based on details from linkedin, literally the kind of problem that @blockpartyapp.com is solving, an actual example we use in our marketing) was OMG how could you be so dumb

View full threadReposted by Block PartyBeing on LinkedIn is relatively unavoidable in my experience, but I don't list my current employer until/unless I'm looking for something new and that means I don't get the gift card scams because that's how they find you.
- Reposted by Block Partysince then I've always said I provided real value by being foolish enough to fall for it, but wise enough to realize I'd been had. the middle path.
- Reposted by Block Partyat my first job I fell for a fake fedex email targeted to a team@company distro list, started downloading an attachment that was [long hex string].js
- Reposted by Block PartyScammers have gotten really really effective, sadly. You might think it would be nearly impossible to just call a person and get them to pull thousands of dollars cash from the bank, learn how to use Bitcoin, and feed it bill by bill into an CryptoATM in a few hours, but it happens daily.

- Reposted by Block Partythanks for sharing this stuff. I feel for your intern, the scamming is very sophisticated and they target the best parts of ourselves. (they took $200,000 of my mom's retirement as she went into dementia, and ngl, if I had the chance I'd leave em on a landing during a wildfire in cougar country.
- Reposted by Block PartyI used to think that way. Then I got a text from my boss that totally seemed legit and got all the way to the buying the gift cards part before all my past formal training kicked in and I realized what was happening. So had to either adjust my ‘tude or decide I was a dummy. Once, Johnny… Once… :)

- Reposted by Block PartyMy SIL got me some really yummy smelling laundry detergent from a small business, I went to re-order by googling the business name and clicked on the first link (which was a paid ad)- super exciting they were having a massive sale, everything 70% off! I filled up my cart, was gonna stock up..
- Reposted by Block PartyWe notified the rest of the organization and our IT folks, and said boss has been a lot better about using work emails and phones since!
- Reposted by Block PartyMy colleague and I fell for one several years ago. Our boss wasn't always the best at communicating through official channels, and we actually do use gift cards for staff rewards. Fortunately, he was actually in the office that day, so we both asked about it directly, and realized what was up.
- Reposted by Block Party🔝 Scammers manipulate people. They trigger instinctive behavior that bypasses intellectual self-awareness ⬇️
- Reposted by Block PartyAnd in their FAQ it was obvious that this is an ongoing issue for them, ppl getting scammed and then yelling at the real company. Google just publishing scam sites at the top of searches now as long as they pay for that spot, it’s WILD.
- Reposted by Block Partyand thankfully happened to notice that the checkout wasn’t secure. On my phone, idk how I even caught that! Then noticed their url was off. Went back to search and found the actual company site, the scam site was pretty much a clone!
- Reposted by Block PartyPublicly available info makes it *super* easy to do this. I got the opening to this same scam last year: text message on my personal cell phone. Fortunately I was like, "ummm sounds phishy" and immediately messaged my colleague on Teams. Easily could have been pieced together from LinkedIn.

- Reposted by Block PartyScams perpetuate in part because of the social stigma the scam victims experience. They keep quiet and so the population as a whole doesn't learn or share or support each other and the vulnerable are preyed on again and again. And we're all vulnerable. Nobody is immune to every scam out there.
