- Reposted by Steven GeniseA human writer uses a dash to set off a relatively abrupt jump in thought. But the machines are constantly calculating the most predictable next thing to say, plodding around the same area. So the machine dash looks like it's gesturing toward something new, only to always land on something obvious.

- Tear gas and needs to be banned. There is actually zero appropriate use case for it.
- Just experienced the most intense tear gassing of my life by federal officers outside the ICE facility in Portland where marchers gathered. There was no fast exit as they indiscriminately threw loads of gas and flash bangs. Children were in the crowd screaming. @oregoncapitalchronicle.com

- Reposted by Steven GeniseThe people of Minnesota have executed one of the most impressive civil resistance campaigns I can remember: - Organized a city wide general strike - Maintained nonviolent discipline amidst violence - Mobilized 10,000s in subzero temps to protest and watch ICE - Flipped public opinion against ICE

- Reposted by Steven GeniseThesis: ICE is un-American and the Minneapolis protestors are real Americans. Antithesis: Ackshually ICE is operating in a long American tradition of racist terror. Synthesis: Minneapolis is now the epicenter of a clash between two distinct but historically grounded American political traditions.

- Reposted by Steven GeniseDear #BookSky Minneapolis has an absolutely incredible literary culture. In fact, three of the most important small presses call the city home; Coffeehouse Press, Graywolf, and Milkweed. There are also a ton of great bookstores in the Twin Cities. So here's the assignment...
- Reposted by Steven GeniseCongress passed the Taft-Hartley Act in 1947 (over Truman's veto) to make general strikes so incredibly difficult to organize that there hasn't been one since. That there is a general strike happening in a major US city on such short notice is nothing short of a miracle.
- Reposted by Steven GeniseMy take on the Jan 23 action in Minneapolis is that I don’t really care whether it’s a “true” general strike (we could argue about that all day). What DOES matter is that it’s a bold and necessary escalation, and local labor leaders are publicly encouraging workers to join in anti-ICE resistance

- Sorry man, I ain’t got time for this shit when an entire city is risking life and limb in community defense and millions flood the streets in protest every couple of months, and while we’ve got a universal desire to replace our opposition with fighters. It’s possible to be both apologetic and active

- Reposted by Steven GeniseThe goal of ICE watch is to surround that second type of perpetrator with people who *disapprove* of their actions. It will make them less likely to be violent and we’ve seen that, in some cases, that includes rethinking their original plan to tear a family apart too.
- Reposted by Steven GeniseAmong perpetrators of violence, there is a very small share who are independently motivated to violence. But the vast majority of perpetrators commit violence to seek approval and status from others. This is particularly true among men who use violence to affirm their masculinity.

- Reposted by Steven GeniseI’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports. And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.” Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

- My worry is that he does some executive order that claims we’re in a state of exception, or a “special legislative session” or some bullshit, which continues the current congress indefinitely. States hold their elections, but actually seating the new congress gets delayed while the courts argue it
- There is no getting through this without more innocent people being hurt or killed, but they do not have the strength to WIN unless we stop fighting back. The path towards driving them out has less violence on the innocent then the path to ceding power. It’s safer in the front.
