- Rough week for me, but still masked. Wear a mask ya’ll. 👍

- From Raj’s Covid Variant tracker in yesterday’s (1 Feb 2026) update: just one BA.3.2 lineage was sequenced in New York. Variant RE.2.1 (which is the title given to a BA.3.2.2 type). It’s interesting Mike Honey’s tracker is showing about a 20% frequency of BA.3* in the US. May be CDC data?

- The woes of design is sometimes reinventing the wheel. But the benefit is still the learning along the way Fortunately, this only took part of a morning to make my shiny new wheel.
- Flowflex is also my go-to rapid test. From the data it has done the best to maintain a high level of sensitivity compared to other rapid tests. (Although they are also overdue for an update in test target). Particularly when one does a combined cheek, throat, and nasal swabbing.
- Reposted by PatrickthebiosteamistSo far there has only been one US patient reported with BA.3.2. Meanwhile, these are the wastewater detections to date. Want to know what's really going on? Check the wastewater; we don't miss shit.

- Reposted by PatrickthebiosteamistBA.3.2 has gone from ~8% to ~44% of all sequences in Scotland over the course of December. Larger sample sizes in a smaller nation (Scotland), unsurprisingly present a much more consistent picture in variant trends than smaller sample sizes over a much larger, more heterogeneous country (Germany).
- Reposted by PatrickthebiosteamistBavaria was the last region to receive BA.3.2 , in the second half of December BA.3.2 has been already 30% there from 0% in November. In UK in January we are seeing higher % of BA.3.2 in Scotland and Northern Ireland

- The most aggravating thing about Gavin Newsom in this present moment is that he’s literally just emulating his behaviors after Trump - a direct mirror of how Trump is and how he communicates. And Blue MAGA appears to be eating it up. He’s not the one. He’s not the guy. Don’t let him be.

- This is a sad day. While the Biden administration initiated the work on this… ceasing reporting to the WHO of COVID-19 data, fighting equitable vaccine access by prioritizing US patent protections, mishandling the rollout of COVID vaccines to other countries… This final action will impact us all

- Some great more accurate terms for ICE obscuring their faces with fabric. We can say gaiters (what they predominantly wear), we can say face coverings, we can say they are concealing their faces, hiding their identities, etc. We will NOT call those masks. We will NOT conflate this.
- Covid wastewater signal trending downwards. Wouldn’t count out a second Winter bump due to BA.3.2/subvariants of it landing in the US with crossover expected by end of January or early February (when it starts to overwhelm current dominant variants).

- Reposted by PatrickthebiosteamistBA.3.2 reaches dominance in Netherlands
- Reposted by PatrickthebiosteamistStill more new NSP1 mutations in the BA.3.2 uploaded from the Netherlands today. We've never seen anything like this kind of rapid evolution in NSP1 (whose primary role is to shut down host-protein translation and degrade host mRNA). I've labeled all BA.3.2-specific NSP1 muts here. 1/3
- Another weird aspect of BA.3.2 evolution so far: an extraordinary number of NSP1 mutations. NSP1 is only 180 AA, but a new mutation shows up almost every day there, often on top of previous new ones. The @nextstrain.org visual here can't even accommodate all the NSP1 muts—at least 2 are invisible.

- A communication point we need to work on is that the immune system is not a muscle that needs to be flexed. It is a finite resource. Many parents I’ve talked to view illness sharing as a twisted form of community care for children and coworkers. That by spreading it, they’re making them stronger.
- One of my coworkers consistently brings up how her young kids are sick all the time, & how this is very good for them, as it will mean they will be less sick later in life. Also, that kids are just sick all the time, you can’t do anything to avoid it. That outbreaks in daycare aren’t too common.

- In our fight for clean air, it’s important to not use qualifiers for masking. First, yes, we should improve air filtration and air turnover rates across the board. However, it’s ridiculous to think that negates the need for masking. They talk with you, sneeze/cough on you. You’ll get sick.

- 👏🏻 and it even emphasis that Covid spreads both through droplet AND airborne transmission, being more predominantly spread by the airborne route. However, that greater preference towards airborne transmission doesn’t mean that it only spreads via the airborne route to those that make that mistake.

- Guys, you don’t want this super flu…
- Reposted by PatrickthebiosteamistYou might not have heard, but the northeastern U.S. is in a COVlD surge. We use wastewater levels to derive estimates of the proportion of people actively infectious in each state (prevalence), e.g., 1 in 24 people in Connecticut.
- This is the exact same rhetoric that has been used to downplay the on-going Covid pandemic. As always, wear a mask, get vaccinated, don’t spread diseases.
