- Tresasury Sec Scott Bessent just told the House Financial Services Committee that there will be a Super Bowl ad this weekend for the new Trump accounts for babies. Who is paying for that pricey commercial?
- A secret family office is quite something. Wow.
- 🚨EPSTEIN'S SECRET FAMILY OFFICE REVEALED 🚨 Paul Barrett was Jeffrey Epstein's longtime private banker at JPMorgan What has never been reported until now: he set up a family office to trade on Epstein's behalf in the last years of the sex offender's life as.ft.com/r/8101f34a-f...
- Wow, this story. It is so telling of the news landscape we live in that a not-so-mini bank bailout seems to be happening as we speak and...almost no one has noticed.
- 🚨NEWS: The Fed has quietly delivered nearly HALF A TRILLION DOLLARS of no-strings-attached bank bailouts in the last few months, according to documents reviewed by The Lever. The new bailouts are already 60% of the amount of the financial crisis TARP bailout. www.levernews.com/the-federal-...

- I talked to @jasonfurman.bsky.social about the Trump admin's decision to launch a first-in-history criminal inquiry into Fed chair Jay Powell—and what happened in other countries when leaders compromised central bank independence. (Tl;dr it wasn't good!) www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
- Reposted by Hannah LevintovaThe administration is freezing $10B in child care and anti-poverty funding in five states—putting care for hundreds of thousands of working-class families at risk. Cuts or delays this large will strain providers, disrupt quality care for children, and could force working parents out of their jobs.

- YES. Thayer Street businesses need our $ right now and East Side Pockets is the absolute GOAT. My go-to order is a gyro-falafel combo wrap! Also low-key the best waffle fries in Providence.

- As a Brown alum and Providence resident, I have been trying to find the right words to capture the vast grief layered across this community and the people who love it. In the end, I’m not sure if it’s really, fully possible to articulate. But I tried: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
- And if I may—I deliberately put a lot of links to local coverage into this piece, from The Providence Journal especially. In moments like these, please read and subscribe to the local journalists doing this work! www.providencejournal.com/live-story/n...
- Reposted by Hannah LevintovaThe longer that the Brown shooter goes un-caught, the more room there will be for the spread of conspiracy theories, misinformation, AI junk, and all manner of racist/xenophobic speculation. This worries me. And we're already seeing it.

- I grew up in Allston as part of a family of immigrants. BU students are temporary guests in a corner of Boston that has long been a hub for immigrants from around the world. To do this (and to claim allegiance to the neighborhood along the way) is abhorrent.
- Not only is the GCB the perfect dive bar, but it is also a nonprofit, plus the owners will let you throw a rager of a wedding reception (I would know!). Glad it is getting its time to shine: www.bostonglobe.com/2025/10/23/m...
- This July, @acleek.bsky.social & I made a radio show about a major hospital landlord named Medical Properties Trust. Now, we’ve unraveled MPT's aggressive effort to silence and surveil its critics as they tried to raise alarm, using docs leaked to @occrp.org www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
- MPT owns and rents out nearly 400 facilities globally. A few years ago, journalists and financial analysts began pointing out that MPT might be hiding the fact that its hospitals were struggling under high rents. Things got intense; a critic’s bank account was hacked: revealnews.org/podcast/medi...
- What we found when we went through these leaked docs, though, is a much broader effort. MPT amassed an army of crisis management professionals to protect its reputation, eventually working alongside 3 crisis PR firms, 5 law firms, and 2 private intelligence firms. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
-
View full threadInternal emails show MPT’s top executives referring to the Wall Street Journal reporter who was writing about them as a “deranged, pretend journalist” whose sources, they claimed, were “absolutely fake.” “I’m tired of this guy, wrote MPT’s CEO. “It’s time we go on the offensive.”
- Looks like Pulte filed his backdated Form 3 yesterday, the day we published my story. Better 7 months late than never! fanniemae.gcs-web.com/static-files...
- New from me: In March, FHFA director Bill Pulte made himself chairman of the board of Fannie Mae. But after, he did not file a required disclosure form tied to the role with the SEC—the same kind of paperwork error he has used to attack Trump's political foes. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

- Some of the wishes on this list include getting rid of state regulation of children's online safety (to decrease costs, ofc), ending *all* state regulation of banking, and eliminating minimum and fair-wage requirements. Quite the lineup!

- Reposted by Hannah LevintovaBill Pulte has weaponized his office to attack Trump’s political enemies, including economist Lisa Cook. However, critics argue that Pulte's abuse of office is "a far, far greater offense than any personal mortgage occupancy fraud by a federal official."
- This study, published earlier this month, is quite striking. Especially because studying the impacts of PE ownership on hospitals is quite hard. The industry is opaque; plus, PE firms buy and then sell off the properties so fast that it's hard to track when something is or isn't PE-owned.
- Medicare patients who get emergency surgery in private-equity hospitals are 42% more likely to die in the next 30 days, according to new research. www.marketwatch.com/story/medica...
- And it is one more data point showing how the private equity business model isn't compatible with providing the best patient care. I wrote about another example for our latest issue, that of the PE-fueled Steward Health Care: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
- I wrote about the rise and fall of Steward Health Care—fueled by a private equity firm, a real estate trust, & multimillionaire executives. The saga is a stunning indictment of what happens when financiers try to squeeze huge returns from the places that save people's lives. /1 shorturl.at/TcvV7
- I read about the death of Sungida Rashid in @bostonglobe.com, at what is to this day’s my family’s neighborhood hospital. She died after Steward hadn’t paid the bill for the device that could have saved her. I wanted to know how many more families there might be like hers. /2
- Brilliant data wizard @melissa.news scraped every malpractice, personal injury, and wrongful death case tied to Steward hospitals. @idgordon.bsky.social and I sifted through them, and found 469 cases involving 83 patient deaths. Plus, a troubling pattern of problems in labor and delivery…/3
