- So weird we're still here. To me, this shows how arbitrary it is to get space in Nature (in this case in its blog). www.nature.com/articles/d41...
- If you work with genomics, bioinformatics or evol biol, when was the last time you read a paper from Nature EcoEvo? People in our field seem obsessed about publishing there but I barely read their papers. Very ecological, macroevolutionary - which are fine subjects, but out of sync with what we do.
- Plus ... Predatory publishing fees.

- <what> On remote oceanic islands, colonizing lineages often undergo founder effects. Moreover, each time a species disperses to a new island, an additional bottleneck is introduced. ...
- ... Despite these constraints, islands are hotspots for diversification, including remarkable examples of adaptive radiations. We aim to focus on different lineages of birds in the Indo-Pacific to understand the impact of sexual selection and hybridization in genetic variation of different lineages.

- We tested whether TEs were associated with diversification, speciation, hybridization or niche shifts. We did this in response to the growing literature that claims that TE bursts are drivers/associated with diversification.
- 🔍 Despite rapid speciation, niche shifts, and hybridization, we found no significant TE accumulation differences across species or hybrids. 🌵 Even in arid-adapted lineages—where genome downsizing may be expected—TEs didn’t decline.
-
View full threadSo our conclusion was 📉 Rather than fueling macroevolution, TEs might just be "along for the ride", and we emphasize the distinction between TEs as drivers of specific phenotypes (e.g. melanic form of the pepper moth) and TEs are drivers of diversification (which they do not seem to do).
