This experience has reinforced to me that at times hostility aimed at the humanities comes from people needing to believe investing in them is a waste of time, energy, and effort. They need to affirm that their sacrifices for today’s notions of practicality are right.
Hey, if you’re in the game industry and have a literature degree, would you please comment?
We got a family friend over here who insists my having a career in games while holding a literature degree is a one-off aberration and per usual, I’m not letting it go.
I sacrificed a lot to go to college, and I sacrificed a lot to study literature, creative writing, and rhetoric. I am so fortunate to have the job I have using the degrees I earned and I know that’s not possible for everyone, especially given the dire state of US education, student debt, etc.
But degree or not, taking the time to study, read, and critically engage with literature will never be a waste of time. I cannot imagine who I’d be without it.
I’m not saying anything new and our family friend is wonderful. He’ll laugh when he sees all the responses because he’s a good sport.
Might I suggest when making your resolutions this year you start by making a big ole list of books right along with it.
If I could read only one novel next year, what would you suggest?
