The GOP is an insane party with unpopular ideas. You need to be or act like an insane person with unpopular ideas in order to win R primaries. Many of these candidates lose swing states. This is the reason Dems are even close in and sometimes hold the Senate despite the structural disadvantages.
In 2010, Dems candidates distanced themselves from Obama to try to avoid thermostatic backlash and punishment for the ACA. This was seen as smart strategy at the time.
