The American Library in Paris has quite a few nice scientific biographies - I guess I got my winter reading sorted
If you’re into von Neumann I strongly recommend “The MANIAC” by Benjamín Labatut. Wonderful and weird
Nov 12, 2025 15:24Ah thanks for the rec! I really enjoyed the first chapter of "When we cease to understand the world" by Labatut but then got a bit unsettled by the unannounced mixture of facts and fiction in the rest of the book. Is that one different?
I’m just starting “When we cease” so can’t compare. MANIAC is told like a novel so I’m sure there’s fiction mixed in. But the prose! Should be a great companion to a proper bio of von Neumann.
Agree, Labatut’s writing is remarkable.
