- They studied the origins of the urban human-biting mosquitos Culex pipiens form molestus. This mosquito was believed to have evolved in cellars in Northern Europe during the last 200 years. However this study showed that it actually evolved in Egypt thousands of years ago.
- Importantly, the study also sheds light on West Nile virus transmission, which is transmitted by mosquitoes from birds to humans.
