- ✝️🇺🇦 Pope Leo XIV has come out strongly against Putin’s war: “This is an imperialist invasion. Russia wants to seize territory based on a belief in strength and superiority.” He stated that crimes against humanity are being committed in Ukraine and called for an immediate end to the violence.
- Chancellor Friedrich Merz says he wants Europe to gain complete "independence" from the US, and has put forward the idea of creating a new European defense union to replace NATO, including nuclear cooperation with France and the UK. He is hawkish on Russia and supports more weapons to Ukraine. 🇩🇪

- Zelenskyy has appointed well-respected Mykhailo Drapatyi as the new head of Ukraine’s ground forces. He had an important role in the 2022 Kherson offensive. This year, he was responsible for the defense of Vovchansk. He’s famous for “the flying IFV” when Ukrainian forces retook Mariupol in 2014. 🇺🇦
- Irish voters are casting their ballots today as polling shows a tight election race that has the centre-right government parties of Fine Gael & Fianna Fail and the left-nationalist opposition Sinn Fein all around 20 percent support. - NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Transformation Admiral Pierre Vandier said to Politico he hopes that next year's NATO summit in The Hague will send a message to the EU. Vandier believes Europe needs to take more risks, spend more, be faster and cut bureaucracy to win the new global arms race. 🇪🇺
- Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen says she agrees with Swedish prime minister Kristersson that the Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3 should be taken to Swedish waters. It’s currently suspected of destroying 2 undersea telecom cables linking Finland-Germany and Sweden-Lithuania.

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides reportedly presented a plan of Cyprus’ possible future accession to NATO to US President Joe Biden at their meeting in October 30 at the White House. - The new European Council president Costa on Trump’s peace plan: "I’m very curious about how Trump says that with two calls, he can finish the war in Ukraine in 24 hours." Costa added: "I also hope to finish the war in a just way, but ensure a lasting peace, not just for the time of our lunch.”
- Military advisors from North Korea have arrived in Russian-occupied Mariupol, CNN reports, citing a source in Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU). - The reason Ireland gave for not joining the Schengen area in 1985 was the existence of the CTA (Common Travel Area) with the UK, which would have disappeared if Ireland joined and the UK did not. As there is no physical border in Northern Ireland, Schengen would have required putting one in place.

- A dispute between Croatia and the European Union over who should investigate a high-profile corruption case involving a former minister has deepened.
