Gamers (tm) are so insecure, that there's a popular game they purposefully ignore, that bodies whatever they like in terms of player numbers. Like... It's okay to not play the most popular stuff, you guys can just enjoy other things.
If anything those ppl should frame it to themselves as simply having 'more refined tastes than the masses', or something. But nope, they wrap their identity in validation from a market of consumers that are strangers to them (in multiple ways).
They also try to go for "ew, you play that popular game, that means you play shit!", so they kinda do try to act like they have better taste, it's just they want their own taste to be validated, but once it is - they just go "nah, this popular game I like is shit now, I decided"
