Is it perfect? Of fecking *course* not. Give it half a season to find its damn groove. Is it for everybody? Maybe not. Not my problem. Is it TREK? Definitely, charmingly, and *ineluctably.* (2/3)
I was Very Worried for the first fifteen minutes but then it became clear that the show ALSO understood that this was not what the federation was supposed to be and that setup was a backdrop for a story about striving to be something better. Which is maybe the most Star Trek thing possible.
Exactly right. Trek isn’t about being satisfied with what you are: it’s about acknowledging that you can always be more, and better. (Which is exactly why some people HATE it so much.)
