- We have been working on lots of exciting projects in the DH Lab so far this term! Recently, our DH Interns and GBP Assistant Technician have been working with images from the @exeter.ac.uk archive to learn how to digitise glass negatives #Digital #Humanities #DigitalHumanities #Digitisation #DHLab
- The process involves our 150MP cultural heritage camera, A0 Guardian Copystand, and a lightbox that we modify with black card to block out the light around an image. #Digital #Humanites #DH #DHLab #DigitalPreservation #Digitisation #Photography #PhotographyNegatives #Interns #Internships #Exeter
- 'It is interesting to see the University's development unfolding with each photograph - from the construction of the Physics tower to cars from across decades. It was great to learn how to handle this material and how to detect forms of decay like Vinegar Syndrome' - Molly, Assistant Technician

- Recently, our DH interns have learned the importance of digitising legacy media like VHS. Over time and with improper storage, VHS tapes steadily deteriorate with the magnetic tape losing quality. This leads to warping or mould, which renders it unplayable! #Digital #Humanities #Internships #DH
- Even if tapes remain in good condition, the equipment needed to view them is disappearing as VHS players are no longer commonly manufactured and working units grow rarer. By converting to digital files, we free recordings from depending on obsolete technology and prevent their contents being lost
- Once in a digital format, footage can be easily backed up, copied, edited, or restored. It becomes possible to correct colour issues, stabilize shaky video, or repair damaged audio #Digital #Humanities #DigitalHumanities #VHS #LegacyMedia #Digitisation #Interns #Internship #HASS #DigitalResearch

- Last week, our DH Interns were introduced to photogrammetry & 3D Imaging Photogrammetry is the process of extracting accurate measurements and 3D information from overlapping photographs. This allows us to create digital models to analyse and preserve fragile original objects #Digital #Humanities
- By taking images of a surface or object from different angles, software identifies common points and uses triangulation to reconstruct shape and scale. This results in outputs such as 3D models, point clouds, and detailed maps #Digital #Humanities #3D #Interns #Internships #DH #Exeter #DHLab #HASS
- 3D modelling allows us to create digital versions of physical objects. These can be made available for people to view and study, when the originals may be too fragile or valuable to be handled, or not available. Measurements and analysis can be carried out that would only be possible digitally

- Last week, the DH Interns were introduced to Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI). RTI is a method of creating an interactive digital image of an object with a moveable light source #RTI #ReflectanceTransformationImaging #HASS #Humanities #Digital #DigitalHumanities #AI #DH #DigitalResearch
- Often referred to as 2 1/2- dimensional imaging, RTI can offer a superior view of surface relief and texture compared to conventional photography. It can produce views of marks, inscriptions, and indentations to assist with readability, and create a visually engaging experience of the object
- Creating an RTI involves photographing a subject while varying lighting angles in a controlled manner. Spheres are included in the photographs to record the angle & enable the processing software to calculate a matrix of surface normals that indicate the direction of reflected light from the surface

- This term we have been thrilled to welcome a fabulous new set of DH interns! Internships with the lab are a unique, exciting opportunity for HASS students to learn all the digital research methods and practical skills that the lab has to offer! #DigitalResearch #CaptureOne #PhaseOne #Photography
- The interns have been learning the digitisation process in our photography studio. This has involved operating our Phase One 150mp Cultural Heritage camera and Guardian Copystand. They have also been getting to grips with our Capture One photography software #DHLab #ExeterDH #CreativeIndustries
- They are developing valuable technical skills in high-resolution image capture, colour management, & digital file handling. In addition, they have gained hands-on experience in the safe handling of archival material, & learning techniques for ensuring preservation during the digitisation process.
