Big 15mm Impetus 2 game at Chris B’s today, in his Wargames Attic.
Late Romans vs Sassanids.
Really great to be playing ancients again
#wargames #wargaming #shedowarThe Sassanians won of course…?!
We did very well, but losses were heavy on both sides. 600 point armies (so big for Impetus). Really rate the rules very highly

Yep, Impetus usually gives bloody battles😀
So did late Roman/Sassanian battles if we’re honest.
The losses in any “ancient” battle are truly staggering if the histories are to be believed.
True however, the Romans and Sassanians seem to have often battled to a vicious, painful stalemates with serious casualties on both sides but no clear winner. Rather than the loosing loads of men during the rout.
What has always intrigued me is where they got their armies from. In particular the wars with Hannibal. Rome losses 3 -4 armies, the Italian homeland invaded and ravaged, but somehow they raise another 50,000 and train them!!! Impressive, but “how” did they do it!
I’ve read some good books over the last year or so and it was this ability to replace armies that made the Romans different. Led to their empire. Early on I think it had a lot to do with their allies in Italy. Later, in empire times, loot from wars supercharged the professional legions.
PM you. Data is intriguing
