- Reposted by Daniel MertensAlison Johnston and I have a new open access article out arguing that pressure from domestic rather than foreign bondholders is most effective in forcing populist governments to rein in their economic policies. Our case studies are Italy and Hungary, but there are clear lessons for the USA.

- 1. 'Rally around the flag' is not an automatism. 2. We apparently need more catastrophic droughts, wildfires, etc to have this conversation on 'green' spending 3. Does anyone count how often RRF money has already been 'repurposed'?
- This is inane. If you want EU money for joint defense projects, joint decision-making is part of the deal—there’s no way around it. If you see that as a power grab, you’re fundamentally confused about the choices on the table. www.politico.eu/article/eu-l...

- This week 50 years ago, German "Der Spiegel" covered on post-oil crisis recession (unemployment had doubled in 1974, annual real growth was zero). Headline Q was more than just business cycle policy: "Will the market economy remain?" Feels like a question now being asked for almost four full years.
