As far as I can make out, just for the vibes. They were pretty prosperous in Ireland, and went out second class, not crammed in steerage. And then one woman made a very good marriage, and three brothers promptly followed her over to work for her husband and become millionaires.
Genuinely curious: If your family is American, what brought them here?
Mine: religious nuttery & primogeniture
My g-grandfather went out, stayed a couple of months, then came back home and never left his farm again.
My paternal grandfather went to the USA, got a job, brought his wife over, had a daughter, saved up, then moved back to Sweden and bought a farm.
My mother went to the USA, worked as a maid, then secretary, took evening classes in makeup/hairdressing, then was ordered by her parents to move back.
