I believe there are other reasons as well. There's personal enrichment, no doubt. The emoluments clause should prevent that in the USA; it does require enforcement. Oh, and also vengeance. And of course, the thrill of murder which a psychopath enjoys coupled with the "by proxy" element cowards use.
