Part III: The Man who Would Be God-Emperor
I know it’s long. It’s long because I wanted to show the full scope of this—not to drive home a point (although the details do demonstrate the enormity of the project) so much as to ensure readers understand all the details.
Many readers will already be familiar with the way AIs work, and others will have read reporting on the events I describe. But I think most people don’t fully understand why the AI control problem is so urgent.
Writing this represented a huge amount of labor (not least because I had to learn so much to be sure I knew what I was talking about). But I made all of it paywall-free. This should tell you how alarmed I am.
I feel as if I’m standing on the sidewalk with a sign, begging passersby to understand that if common sense doesn’t reassert itself, quickly, the end really could be nigh.

But I think it should hold your attention all the way through. (If it doesn’t, the fault is mine, because in addition to being utterly horrifying, the story is also the most fascinating thing I’ve ever encountered.)
