- #OwlishMonday These lovely owls welcome visitors in to the Oxford Museum (of natural history) left. Far right, a squirrel appears to be about to over-indulge in luscious bunches of grapes! Inside, a forest of capitals dazzles the visitor with their floral & leafy brilliance @iangrebe.bsky.social
- Brilliant. I can’t recall these at all, but then again it’s all a bit overwhelming in there (in a good way, of course). Those capitals look a bit like they used to, or perhaps at one time were destined to, have columns attached to the bottom? Anyway - here is another Oxford owl, in return
- I agree with you about column-less capitals. Just a little disconcerting. I like a bit of overwhelm, and the narrative about Skidmore's collapsed first roof is just so riveting. The cast iron structure & wrought iron decoration are superb.Feb 2, 2026 19:46
- I like the green-tinted Oxford owl very much.
- Oooooh I’ll have to look up more a the roof collapse now - thanks!
- My imagination is always captured by Medieval and later catastrophic collapses of towers and spires - and it was a surprise to find out that in this case, the Victorians suffered the same humiliation!
