Do adopt older cats.
They're often left alone in the shelters. They don't understand why their previous people couldn't stay with them. And then they're alone in a place full of noise and other cats.
Yet they make the best pets when you adopt them.

My aunt adopted a 13-y/o cat last year. He is the most friendly cat of all her countless cats she had over the years.
He even greeted me at the door on Christmas Eve & allowed me to pet him. He seemed sad to see me go when I left for home. He did not like having his pictures taken!
