- And this very good about applying data to understand 'why' generally. Obvious answer when it's explained, but you can only join the dots if you have all the relevant data. Keep collecting records, you never know when they will become important
- Why are the cycles in numbers of young Brent geese, long-tailed skua and curlew sandpiper seen in Europe? youtu.be/wMO7d9svQRs?...
- This is very interesting about the importance of archives and also I think applies* to data centres/herbaria *not the tunnels bit obv

- Very interesting blog on ANCIENT GRASSLAND by Katherine Judson, who is currently researching the topic for her PhD. Fascinating to hear of genetic research into Dyer's Greenweed & very much looking forward to hearing the outcome.

- White Dead-nettle yesterday #WildflowerHour One of those photos that when you post it you think why didn't I take a more attractive angle and then you remember that it was quite a public path and you would have had to get back up again #knees #dignity and so it'll just have to do 😎

- Fantastic to see coppicing happening at the entrance to Askham Bog, a @yorkswildlife.bsky.social nature reserve. Very important that people can see landscapes with active coppicing, and also very important to give more light to the many wet grassland wildflowers that live here
- Recently coppiced Alder showing amazing orange/red coloured wood inside.

- As the National Trust launch a new tv series in which a crack team of highly-trained archaeologists fight monsters from the dungeon dimensions, we ask ... could botanists defend the Earth against the zombie apocalypse using freshly-baked cake and a niche range of hand-crafted bobble hats?
- From December, an interesting urban site that has been left unmanaged for 20/30 odd? years. Seems to have developed as species-poor MG1 with scattered Willow scrub in which Aster has invaded and properly dominates the False Oat-grass where the soil is on the damper side.

- Lesser known fact: if sufficient middle-aged men congregate in any one area, a railway spontaneously generates. In this case there were only four of us (plus a small and very patient dog) so it's a miniature narrow-gauge railway

- Snow here again today and for the foreseeable, so for #WildflowerHour a gorgeous 😍Hogweed😍 flowering on a road-verge in Saltburn-by-the-Sea that we saw as part of our #NewYearPlantHunt on Friday. They often have a pink/crimson tinge to the petals at this time of year - such a great plant
- Reposted by MartinIt’s a good job I did @bsbibotany.bsky.social #NewYearPlantHunt yesterday as this morning everything was covered in snow! Only 13 species seen in bloom but enough for #thewinter10! A single Cherry Plum flower looking lovely for #wildflowerhour & new to me, Hawthorn flowering alongside its berries! 😮
