NJ Birding
Recently bit by the birding bug💙. NJ born and bred with a smattering of Maine, NY and FL. Outdoors as therapy and a break from the madness
- #BirdOfTheDay Alternative Theme is #BlackAndWhite #Birding #BirdPhotography I offer a NJ black Scoter from Barnegut light and a Clark's Grebe from San Francisco Bay
- Long tailed duck, purple sandpiper, snow bunting and ruddy turnstone at barnegut light in NJ. Also saw a Lapland longspur with the buntings but missed the shot which is just killing me. #birding #birdphotohraphy
- Some recent NJ lifers: Harlequin Duck, Red-necked Grebe and White-winged Scoter. #birding #birdphotography. The grebe has been a nemesis, while birding recently a novice birder (like me) asked for bird ID help with a bird pic from AM and lo and behold. After about an hour of looking... found him!
- A greater scaup couple in raritan bay off the shore of Perth amboy.
- Reposted by NJ BirdingPew Research Institute (2023): • Red State Texas has about 2.1 million undocumented immigrants • Red State Florida has 1.6 M undocumented immigrants • Blue State Minnesota has 130,000. And yet only Minnesota is being occupied by masked thugs over "immigration." It's *not* about immigration.
- Great day birding in NJ. Lifer painted bunting with the worst picture ever, flushed and didn't return but got some great looks at Brant's, red breasted mergansers and horned grebes among many others in Perth Amboy. #birding #birdphotography
- 2 Wilson's snipe showed up in Bergen county this weekend. So thankful for the many amazing local birders who find uncommon visitors and share location info on eBird. #birding #birdphotography
- For today's #birdoftheday my #FavouriteOfTheMonth is the snowy owl visiting LBI NJ, a 2.5 mile on the beach made you work a little for it. Gorgeous bird with great looks.
- First trip to western NJ's round valley recreation area. Lots of gulls and ducks. A red head, greater and lesser scaup, horned grebe and hooded merganser. #birdphotography #birding
- Carolina chickadee, red breasted nuthatch, hermit thrush and northern flicker among the pines of western NJ... oblivious to the 14 degree f temps. #birding #birdphotography
- Was going through some pics from my CA trip and liked how this shows the long vs short dowitcher on the left with a marbled godwit and red knot also in the pick #birding #birdphotography #shorebirds
- A wide variety of grebes in CA (horned, eared and clarke's)
- Acorn woodpecker couple proudly claiming their high voltage roost. #birding #birdphotography. Hope everyone is safe and warm with this storm. 14" so far in Bergen county NJ
- Monk parakeet nest in northern NJ. #birding
- A brown pelican and forster's tern chilling on a rock in the bay. #birding #birdphotography.
- Marbled godwit, long billed dowitcher, willet and a red knot on the shores of San Francisco Bay in San Mateo. #birding #birdphotography
- One hotspot with a ferruginous hawk, white tailed kite, golden eagle, loggerhead shrike and burrowing owl not to mention multiple kestrel's and red tailed hawks. Pretty awesome! #birding #birdphotography
- Yummy? Pretty ambitious food choice for this egret #birding #birdphotography
- Was able to get out for a few hours while in CA on business. First timing birding California. Tons of lifers including Varied thrush, white tailed kite, red knot and short billed gull. #birding #birdphotography
- Had a great experience with a burrowing owl in San Mateo CA. A friend said they look like a muppet and I agree. #birding #birdphotography
- A flock of tundra swan in a random field on the eastern shore of MD near St Michel. The Chesapeake is such a beautiful area of the country. #birding

- Reposted by NJ BirdingPhoto by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.
- Reposted by NJ BirdingHere’s a #birding tip for beginners: don’t overlook flocks of Canada #Geese. Despite their commonness, you might find unexpected visitors, like this solitary Snow #Goose (Anser caerulescens) spotted in Overpeck Park #SnowGoose @aba.org @mybirdcards.com @billpaquin.bsky.social @abcbirds.bsky.social
- Four redhead couples, early am, braving the 20 degree cold and wind on Lake Packanack in Wayne, NJ. Poor light=poor pics on my Nikonp1100 but considering they were about 100 yards away and through a fence, I'll take it. #lifer #birding #birdphotography
- A Merlin watching the ducks at Parsons pond in Franklin Lakes, NJ... thinking big! #birding #birdphotography
- I love these 2 pics of a local graylag goose hanging with the canadas that is evidently an escapee and not countable. My camera is not the best so when I get a clear, detailed shot I need to celebrate them! #birding #birdphotography
- So for the #BirdOfTheDay theme today of #Raptor sharing some of my favs from 2025. Peregrine falcon, Osprey American kestrel and red shouldered hawk. #birding
