- I think this depends on dialect. I’m convinced (h/t @ajdinkin.bsky.social ) that for most American English dialects postvocalic /r/ is a vowel, cf onset /r/ as a consonant - meaning there’s more of a difference than just length. Eg I produce a glottal before “oom” if it’s “spare oom”Dec 11, 2025 13:20
- I think “spare room” vs “spare oom” would be most similar for dialects that have variable postvocalic /r/ deletion - bc those dialects pv /r/ sounds more like their onset /r/
