Behavioural Ecology Bielefeld
We study animal behaviour in the field and in the lab, with a focus on chemical communication, urbanisation and host-microbe interactions.
- Reposted by Behavioural Ecology BielefeldNew preprint out: What kind of husbandry conditions do wild fire salamanders prefer? A question of high relevance given the spread of the deadly fungus Bsal and the need for ex-situ breeding programs. doi.org/10.32942/X2H...

- It was truly a great pleasure to be part of this wonderful conference.
- Last plenary of #ASABWinter2025 by Barbara Caspers! Great talk, especially as so little is known about odour perception in birds - and it appears there’s still a lot to learn 🐦👃

- Reposted by Behavioural Ecology BielefeldOur plenary on Dec 16 of #ASABWinter2025 will be by Barbara Caspers. She’ll be presenting data on how individuals respond to chemical cues of family members, and how being related to the scent donour might change their response. She’ll be sharing with us insights from both the lab and the wild!🥼 🏕️
- Male fire salamander are more yellow! New research from our group. Congratulations Max!!
- New study out: link.springer.com/article/10.1... We studied Fire Salamander colouration using data gatehred by citizen scientists. Males have a higher proportion of yellow than females: is this due to mate chaoice or differential predation threat?
- Back from a fantastic fieldwork course! 🦆🪱🦭 During one week at the Wadden sea, MSc students got to learn about birds, mudflats and stats, and collected data to answer their own research question.
- Reposted by Behavioural Ecology Bielefeld3 year postdoc funded by @ukri.org NERC on between-group cooperation in the Shark Bay dolphins is now live - please share widely 🙏 www.bristol.ac.uk/jobs/find/de...
- Congratulations Valeria!!
- Really proud of this one. Our first study on innovative problem-solving in free-ranging small mammals is fresh off the press of Animal Cognition rdcu.be/eOHl3. We looked at what happens with human disturbance in a protected area...without disturbing our most precious collaborators!
- Ever wondered if the habitat also influences the way individuals smell? In our latest paper we found that fire salamander larvae show habitat specific chemical fingerprints. link.springer.com/article/10.1...
- Still a few days to apply!

- Reposted by Behavioural Ecology Bielefeld📢 City lizards are more social ! Thrilled to share the first paper from my PhD, out now in #BiologyLetters @royalsocietypublishing.org ! We show that urban lizards are more social than their non-urban counterparts 🦎🏙️🌳🧪 doi.org/10.1098/rsbl... @behavecobie.bsky.social
