- What a superb day yesterday. As part of @originalgcg.bsky.social annual seminar, I went walking in the footprints of giants - mainly Iguanadonts. Between Pett Level beach & Fairlight Cove, I observed dinosaur trackways, tail marks, bone beds, fossil wood and ripples ⚒️🪨🦕 @derbyuni.bsky.social
- Yesterday I attended the annual seminar of the Geological Collections Group @originalgcg.bsky.social to learn about putting our collections to work. I presented a poster on @derbyuni.bsky.social collection: emphasis on our unique holistic approach to making our specimens accessible to students.

- Wondering how to use your @derbyuni.bsky.social Biology/Zoology Field Card given to you in induction week? Here I am using it on campus to estimate the percentage of lichen on this tree trunk. 🧪
- Wondering how to use your @derbyuni.bsky.social Earth Science Field Card given to you in induction week? Here I am using it on our Kedleston Road campus dry-stone wall to help with the description of this siliciclastic rock. ⚒️🧪 @derbyuniearth.bsky.social
- Wondering how to use your @derbyuni.bsky.social Earth Science Field Card given to you in induction week? Here I am using an earlier version to align the arrow to indicate North. ⚒️🧪 @derbyuniearth.bsky.social
- Wondering how to use your @derbyuni.bsky.social Biology/Zoology Field Card given to you in induction week? Here I am using it in the department greenhouse to determine the leaf shape and leaf arrangement of a range of plants. 🌱
- Wondering how to use your @derbyuni.bsky.social Biology/Zoology Field Card given to you in induction week? Here I am using it in the department insectary to remind myself of insect morphology. 🧪🦗
- Wondering how to use your @derbyuni.bsky.social Earth Science Field Card given to you in induction week? Here I am in the department rock store using it to determine the grain size and grain shape of these 2 very different loose sediments. ⚒️🧪 @derbyuniearth.bsky.social
- Wondering how to use your @derbyuni.bsky.social Biology/Zoology Field Card given to you in induction week? Here I am using it to get the correct nomenclature to the parts of a flower. 🧪🌱🌼
- Wondering how to use your @derbyuni.bsky.social Earth Science Field Card given to you in induction week? Here I am using it to convey the depth of this fissure seen in a field in Cambridgeshire in mid August. ⚒️🧪 @derbyuniearth.bsky.social
- Wondering how to use your @derbyuni.bsky.social Earth Science Field Card given to you in induction week? Here I am using it in our unique campus mapping facility to help determine the classification of this carbonate rock. @derbyuniearth.bsky.social
- Wondering how to use your @derbyuni.bsky.social Biology/Zoology Field Card given to you in induction week? Here I am using it to provide a scale bar while photographing this gorgeous Cross Orbweaver (Araneus diadematus).

- Loving the dinosaur 🦕 sculptures at Snugburys on the A51. The wildflower meadow looks and smells great too. ⚒️
- Our forensic technician, Mohit Mistry, gave up some time on the DerbyUni Video Spectro Comparator to look at some minerals from @derbyuniearth.bsky.social collection. Fluorite/Beryl/Topaz/Opal/Selenite/Opal in transmittedUV 365nm; violet 410nm; floodUV 365nm; white light.
- While out in the field looking at rocks with @derbyuniearth.bsky.social 1st year students, it’s always nice to look at other things too. Here I think we have (correct if wrong) Marsh thistle, Common Lousewort, Heath milkwort, Round-leaved sundew, Heath bedstraw, Tormentil & Common cotton-grass.
- Four days of geology so far with the Derby Uni @derbyuniearth.bsky.social 1st year students. Siliciclastics, carbonates, contact metamorphism, folded turbidities followed by an into to their mapping area. Sunshine in the Lake District!
- It is great to see current A-level students discovering our Environmental Science programmes at Derby University today.
- I had a wonderful morning with the DerbyUni environmental assessment and control MSc students @nationaltrust.bsky.social Kedleston Hall lakes planning their experimental design and water sampling strategies.
- The final day of the Derby Uni @derbyunigeo.bsky.social field trip with the MSc students took us to Cheshire to discuss fluid flow. ⚒️
- Today saw the Derby Uni @derbyunigeo.bsky.social field trip with the MSc students on the Great Orme. Limestones, dolomites & sequence stratigraphy. ⚒️
- Today saw the DerbyUni @derbyunigeo.bsky.social field trip with the MSc students visit Anglesey. Critical minerals, sediments and even a tiny bit of glaciation.
- A wonderful start to the Derby Uni @derbyunigeo.bsky.social field trip to North Wales with the MSc students - 2 days of sunshine and rocks ⚒️

- Today, was ‘inaugural day’ for our newly installed DerbyUni on-campus #geological mapping facility. Our students did a terrific job utilising a range of outcrops to unravel the geological history of their mapping area. @derbyuniearth.bsky.social

- Yesterday @DerbyUni we had an abundance of #geology. Dr Holly Elliott from @britgeosurvey.bsky.social talked about critical minerals & criticality assessment. Our very own Jordan Phethean then explained “gooey rocks & where they stretch” during his Plate vs Plume talk for non-& geologists. ⚒️

- Looking forward to this today
- What critical minerals are required to achieve net zero and be #sustainable ? Uni of Derby students can find out more from guest lecturer Dr Holly Elliott, coauthor of this report, this Wednesday at DerbyUni (see T1 corridor noticeboards for more info)

- Outcrop 1 of Uni of Derby Evolving Earth field trip for the Earth Scientists & Environmental Sustainability 1st year students. They did a great job of describing and interpreting this wonderful Silurian reef despite the ❄️ ⚒️
- Our Derby University Habitat Management students are continuing with DiG (Derby’s Initiative for Green). Getting stuck in tree planting in the Kedleston Road campus grounds.

- Today saw the first field trip for the first year @DerbyUniEarth @DerbyUni students. We don’t make it easy - extrusive & intrusive igneous, volcaniclastics, sediments and structural all within 1 km squared. Some great sketches and discussions.
- Yesterday I visited Nam Ha National Park near Luang Namtha, Laos. An interesting day learning about the balance between local tribes, tourism and conservation of this tropical upland rainforest.
- Had a wonderful couple of days at the 🐘 elephantconservationcenter.com in Laos. What they are attempting is amazing to see. Their research and ideas make this a great test bed for future conservation projects in the region both specifically for Elephants & for forest conservation & biodiversity
- Thousands of papers on why we conserve - whether for nature or, as here, anthropogenic objects. I don’t think any sum it up quite so well as this sign in Vientiane, Laos. How we conserve maybe a whole different ballgame! #conservation
- So pleased to see the the science museum in London recognising the contributions technicians make to science.🧪⚒️🌱 sciencemuseum.org.uk/see-and-do/tec…
