- With ICA main conference decisions arriving and travel plans for Cape Town starting: don’t forget our ICA preconference on self- and feedback effects in digital communication. You can still submit until January 30, 2026. we’d love to hear from you!
- The #ica26 preconference Affecting myself?! Exploring self & feedback effects in digital communication aims at bringing together scholars to discuss how communicators are shaped by messages & feedback. Extended abstracts due Jan 30, 2026. www.medienstruktur.ifp.uni-mainz.de/affecting-my...
- Another day, another awesome co-author! Thank you so much for this collaboration 😊
- 🎉 📣 Out now in Communication Research! 📣 🎉 What makes us stop using #media in a specific situation? A new study by my great co-author @annastockmann.bsky.social and me examines situational #disengagement from #TikTok and #Instagram. 📱 🔚 Find the paper here: journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1...
- Thank you so much for leading this! 🫶🏻
- Ever found yourself scrolling on your phone in the middle of a conversation?📱👥Curious about why this happens, @annastockmann.bsky.social and I explored the situational drivers of co-present phone use in our new🔓#OpenAccess paper, just published in @mobilemediacomm.bsky.social🎉 (1/6)
- Don’t forget to prepare your abstracts for our ICA precoference! Deadline: Jan 30 #ica26

- Finally :) Preprint of Susanne Baumgartner and my paper Short but still valid: Validating Single-Item Measures for Key Communication Science Constructs for Experience Sampling Research. In a 5-Study procedure, we assess the validity of in total 21 constructs osf.io/preprints/ps...
- Still confused, but uber-happy. The news came out right after #ICA25 has ended: The European Research Council #ERC has awarded me an ERC Advanced Grant! Project DANCE on "Dark Nerd Communities" runs for 5 years with 2.5 million Euros funding. Immensely grateful! erc.europa.eu/.../erc-2024...
- Congrats! 🎉

- Publication alert 🎉📄 In our new paper “The Situation in Media and Communication Research” published in Communication Theory, we present a metatheoretical framework for theorizing media behavior at the situational level. doi.org/10.1093/ct/q...

View full threadUnderstanding what happens on the situational level of everyday life is pivotal for understanding media behavior. We need to approach the situational level as more than just “noise”, acknowledging its theoretical and empirical importance to move our field forward.
- Thanks to my amazing co-authors @joebayer.bsky.social, Gabriella Harari, and @vkarnowski.bsky.social! It’s been a long way, but it was definitely worth it! And thanks to @masurphil.bsky.social and Joerg Matthes for their valuable comments that helped to improve the manuscript considerably!
- That’s where our paper comes in! Our central metatheoretical claim is that we only gain the ability to explain the variability in media behavior by taking the situational level – psychological states, environmental context, and media context – into account.
- We stress the relevance of situational factors in all phases of media behavior on the situational level – media selection, processing, and disengagement – and provide theoretical and empirical guidelines to develop a more durable and generalizable understanding of media behavior.
- Media have penetrated each and every niche of people’s daily lives, drawing our attention to the heterogeneity in use situations. However, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the theoretical foundations and implications of the situational level in our field so far.

- Hierfür kombinieren wir Mobile Experience Sampling (Mainz) mit Experimenten (Mannheim).
- So well deserved, both, of course!

- Thanks to all researchers who supported us with unpublished data! (7/7)
- Results I: 📌The research field covers more than 43 different trait-level predictors 📌These predictors can be categorized into 10 higher-level predictor categories (e.g. personality, technology-related norms & experiences, etc.) (4/7)
- Results II: 📌Problematic media use patterns have the strongest impact on phubbing 📌 There is a high degree of heterogeneity for all predictors, which can be partly explained by the measurement of phubbing and the sample composition (5/7)
- Research interest: We wondered which people are most prone to engage in phubbing ❓ Therefore, we asked (a) which trait-level predictors have been studied so far [and how these can be systematized] and (b) which predictors have the strongest influence on phubbing. (2/7)
- Method: We conducted a systematic meta-analytic review. Based on 791 articles, our systematic literature search 🔎 identified 79 relevant studies and 526 effect sizes on the impact of trait predictors on phubbing. (3/7)
