- Excellent short read - especially pertinent as flags are going up in Brighton and, crucially, being taken down again by anti-fascists
- While there can be no complacency in countering fascists on the streets, concerns about the far right must also be concerns about the role of mainstream politicians and media in shaping the reactionary agenda aurelmondon.medium.com/the-people-l...

- Classic UK govt move: there is a useful fiction of the separation between arms companies and governments. So the UK gets to look like it did something good while materially enabling the bad stuff to happen and letting the Israeli govt cry wolf about how badly it’s treated.

- Just so we’re clear: UK arming Israel’s genocide is legal but trying to stop it is a terrorist offence and now the BBC is equating the IDF with all Jewish people and accusing artists of anti semitism.
- Terrible day for justice: the High Court has ruled against Al Haq in the judicial review of UK arms exports to Israel. 3 main types of reasoning: 1) that some of the issues are non-justiciable ie can't be adjudicated in a UK court of law. So what is the point of export controls?/

- Every day I learn something new about the casual brutality of Israel's assault on Palestinians. Today it's that Israel is the first air force to use F-35 fighter jets in "beast mode", allowing it to carry more & heavier bombs. I can just imagine the dudes coming up with the name.
- Today I'm mostly drafting an op-ed piece about arms sales to Israel. Will share a link once it's up. But for now, leaving here that it was initially pitched to the Guardian and the Independent but apparently it's not a theme they are looking for at the moment. Cos, you know, nothing to see here...
- BBC reports that "UK suspends Israel trade talks and summons ambassador over 'intolerable' Gaza offensive" - I look forward to a forthcoming announcement of an immediate suspension of all arms export licences, which would materially halt Israel's offensive

- It’s hard to overstate this: the govt is saying that “the alleged damage to international peace and security” that suspending F35 parts might have was “a matter of such gravity … that it would have overridden” any serious breaches of IHL in Gaza
- There is NO meaningful detail of ANY “alleged damage” to int. peace & security - it’s all in the closed papers. Only Special Advocates & judge can see those. Observers will scour the eventual judgment for insight. But this is carte blanche exercise of state power. What work is law doing here?
- Bear in mind the excruciating detail that civil society experts are required to give, to even make the case for considering restrictions on arms exports. But the state just gets to say “international peace and security” and the legal system and public opinion are supposed to just accept it
- In the week I'm watching the UK defend a legal case against its arms exports to Israel, it feels both surreal and timely that my article about how the UK manages controversy over its arms sales to Saudi Arabia is published (open access): www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
- Govt says the “immensely serious and imminent risks to international peace and security” mean it needs to continue allowing F35 parts to go to the global pool and on to Israel. What are these risks? *checks notes* “It would undermine US confidence in the UK and NATO”.
