Recently finished No Straight Road Takes You There by @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social & I’m looking forward to her next book. Hope is one of my favorite Dickinson poems but my bird is the brown pelican—both for its improbable look & my personal history with them (1)
‘HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS,’ EMILY DICKINSON
famously wrote, and that often leads to pictures of doves sitting quietly and looking sweet, but what if hope is an albatross that can soar for years without stopping, or an osprey that can haul a thrashing salmon out of rough waters?
New @aceee.org report: "Utility energy efficiency programs ... save energy for a median cost of only $21 per megawatt-hour, the report found. That’s less than half the cost of generating electricity with even the least expensive new gas-fired power plants." www.aceee.org/press-releas... 🔌💡
Thinking today of this statement Bezos made in 2019, when the National Enquirer tried to blackmail him with compromising photos. See the highlighted portion below, about his "unswerving" support of The Post's mission.

The hallmark (the “brand”) of the Washington Post has been accountability journalism. Thus, today’s staff decimation is Bezos’s greatest gift to Trump, so much more valuable than the Melania movie, inauguration money, etc. This disaster began, for real, with the Harris endorsement he killed.
BERNIE SANDERS: Do vaccines cause autism?
BHATTACHARYA: I do not believe that the measles vaccine causes autism
SANDERS: Nah. Uh uh. I didn't ask measles. Do vaccines cause autism?
BHATTACHARYA: I have not seen a study that suggests any single vaccine causes autism
"This is what it looks like when ideology drives energy policy. Keeping money-losing plants online skews the market, making it harder for companies to invest in the infrastructure of the future." writes the @washingtonpost.com editorial board: wapo.st/4kkqSsj 🔌💡
Vehicle efficiency - Have you every wondered how much energy it takes to drive an EV or fossil fuel car the same distance? I worked out the math so you don't have to. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨💧🔋, A 🧵
Given Trump’s interest in Greenland, I guess they wanted DC to get a taste of their winter 🥶
But seriously this heat in the Arctic means more destabilizing melting of Greenland glaciers 😬
scoop: Kristi Noem has more than $1 billion in disaster prevention projects piling up on her desk.
Somehow, three states w/ powerful GOP politicians have escaped the logjam — Georgia, North Carolina, and Oklahoma.
Everyone else left begging for help.
In my experience, nuclear power boosters really don’t like talking about what to do with the nuke waste. New DOE rules cut out most the waste management requirements.
EXCLSUVIE: The Trump administration has secretly rewritten nuclear safety rules and shared them with the companies they're meant to regulate, without making the new rules publicly available.
We've obtained a copy of the new rules and here's what we found.

End of story is this-applies beyond nukes
Hanson said he believes the numerous cuts to the new orders will not necessarily simplify the review process. One of the benefits of having things explicitly written down was that
"contractors and others knew how to comply with the rules," he said.

There's been a lot of discussion about the echoes of the civil rights movement in the protests today, with people obviously drawing comparisons between the strategies, tactics and coalitions that were vital then and are still vital now.
But this post has me thinking about a different echo ...
I suspect right now Stephen Miller and the other nazis are meeting to discuss how a place not as “nice" or "peaceful” as Minnesota will provide better oxygen for their lies and goals of martial law.
pretty wild statement re: Republican Chris Madel drop from race for MN governor:
"Saying he cannot support the national GOP's 'stated retribution on citizens of our state, nor can I count myself a member of a party that would do so."
Minnesota National Guard members have arrived at a federal building and were directed to distribute donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate to anti-ICE protesters. Guard members were issued reflective vests so they would not be mistaken for federal agents.
"They say they're coming to save us from some evil? They're talking about our neighbors who take care of us ... Alex was murdered while he was helping. Mr Rogers said look for the helpers, & right now the helpers have a target on our forehead ... Mr Rogers would be here right now too, so I'm here."
Q: What goals do you have for '26 in Congress for your agenda?
TRUMP: I have great executive orders. Like, water coming out of a sink. The water wouldn't come out. They had all sorts of restrictions. I took them off. Straws. They don't have to be paper anymore. I'd like to have all that confirmed.
Some perspective: The S&P opened down -1.3% on Trump's Greenland saber-rattling. That's $750 billion of wealth destroyed -- roughly equal to estimates of the value of Greenland.
And so ~in dollar terms~ his shenanigans have already cost the US one Greenland, and we've got nothing to show for it.
The main bank account holding revenue from the Venezuelan oil sales is located in Qatar.
“There is no basis in law for a president to set up an offshore account that he controls so that he can sell assets seized by the American military,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

I am calling for a complete and total boycott of the Mercator projection in all news stories about Greenland until every member of the American public has seen this
Surprised Sen. @chrismurphyct.bsky.social didn’t point out that Canada is a member of NATO. A US invasion of Greenland could trigger a larger conflict…
I can't believe I'm posting this video - but we actually have to have a conversation about the real world implications of America going to war over Greenland.
Let me walk you through it. It doesn't turn out well for us.
So much to say about this. First of all, the cost estimates for adaptation in Marin are wrong. They only consider the costs of keeping tidal waters out- not the cost of coping with rising groundwater behind walls and levees, which is the real hidden flood problem

“Uruguay did what most nations still call impossible: it built a power grid that runs almost entirely on renewables—at half the cost of fossil fuels. The physicist who led that transformation says the same playbook could work anywhere—if governments have the courage to change the rules.”
GERMAN PRESIDENT STEINMEIER:
“.. the United States has broken with the values that it helped to establish ..
“.. we have now moved beyond the stage where we can lament the lack of respect for international law or the erosion of the international order; we are far beyond that, I believe.”

I've watched thousands of videos from the Jan. 6 riot as part of NPR's reporting and archive project on that day.
Here are some of the lesser known videos that have really stuck with me.

Former Special Counsel, Jack Smith, explicitly states:
"President Trump was by a large measure the most culpable and most responsible person in this conspiracy. These crimes were committed for his benefit. The attack that happened at the Capitol, part of this case, does not happen without him."
Despite my long experience with climate deniers, it is still shocking, & saddening, what has happened in the 5 years since the MAGA attack on the Capitol on January 6th
Published this warning about what could happen to the memory of January 6 on the first anniversary of the attack. Never imagined so much of the country would — willfully, foolishly — forget so soon. www.nytimes.com/2022/01/06/o...
