- Have fallen down an Elisabeth Rethberg rabbit hole after listening to that 1939 Met Simon Boccanegra. What an extraordinary voice! So focused, like a laser, and so penetrating. It doesn't strike me as exceptionally large but I think that focus would have made it audible in even the biggest houses.
- This is a perfect example of that incredible focus: open.spotify.com/track/0IGiUB...
- Tibbett and Pinza. What an extraordinary duo. (Listening to the 1939 Simon Boccanegra with these two gentlemen.) open.spotify.com/album/1UNdft...

- My flock has a good mix of breeding and non-breeding males and females. Although I'm near enough to the coat to be considered "coastal California", my adult male birds all sport tri-coloured rather than the "coastal" bi-coloured wings.
- I have no idea why they've chosen this area, so unlike their usual preferred marshy environs. My neighbour does have a koi pond but that hardly counts as a wetland. In any case, they seem surprisingly happy and I hope the sunflower seeds I put out for the finches are sufficient for their needs.
- My beautiful and unexpected redwing blackbirds are back again this year. Last year was the first time I encountered them in my backyard or even this general area. Today, I had a whole small flock (approx. 10 birds) settle on the branches of my fig tree and watch as I pruned the bougainvillea.
- They have the oddest voices and calls, somewhat robotic and metallic, very unlike the chirpy little finches that mostly populate my yard. They are also relatively fearless (I have to come right up on one for it to fly away). I feel very lucky that they have chosen to visit my neighbourhood.
