New paper out – Why do Swiss Germans struggle with the English STRUT vowel (but, sun, up)? It doesn’t exist in Swiss German. Findings: KV > Gymi, boys > girls, Netflix/music/gaming ≈ no effect.

Unbekannter Anruf – wie meldest du dich? Ältere sagen oft nur „Ja?“ oder ihren Nachnamen. Jüngere überraschen: Sie nennen häufiger Vor- und Nachnamen. Offenbar spielt der Wunsch nach klarer Identifikation und Individualität eine grössere Rolle als vermutet – auch regional unterschiedlich.

Gestern Abend durfte ich beim Verein Züritüütsch den Dialäktatlas vorstellen und über sprachliche Veränderungen – besonders im Zürichdeutschen – sprechen. Zuvor hatte ich die Gelegenheit, ein Interview mit TeleZ zu führen. Ich freue mich sehr darüber, wie viel Interesse unsere Forschung weckt.

"AI" is fundamentally bad at social things, and language is social. Add to this that there's no profit incentive for language documentation and preservation, and you see that is a feel-good smoke screen. These companies do not care about marginalized people. They make money off of exploitation.

Oh absolutely not. This is why I don't typically post lecture slides on Canvas, and now I never will again without an accommodation request for that individual student. I've always felt that most students did better when they listened to me instead of furiously tried to copy the slides anyway.
Recently talked to a student who admitted to using ChatGPT as a study device - by feeding it all of the class lecture slides and having it generate summaries. So now OpenAI has ownership of all the slides my co-instructor and I created from scratch…

Bill Labov died this morning. I'm not coherent enough to talk about how important and influential and brilliant he was. I am very sad.
I was so lucky to know him, and I am grateful every day that he (and Gillian, and Walt, etc) built an academic field where kindness is expected.

New paper led by @acwiek.bsky.social shows trilled [r] is matched to jagged shapes in 20+ different languages.
Effect stronger than bouba/kiki + weaker for languages where trill is primary variant.
We also discuss implications for acoustics vis-a-vis articulation in iconicity/sound symbolism.

New study on crossmodal iconicity shows [r] = rough and [l] = smooth, even in langs that conflate them.
The results show "that speech sounds are not just acoustic objects, but they also have a texture and a shape to them".
