- On 13 August 1977, anti-fascist activists and the local community in London's south-east heavily fought the National Front and the Metropolitan Police in the 'Battle of Lewisham'. A precursor to the formation of the Anti-Nazi League a few months later, 'Lewisham' was seen as an anti-fascist victory.

- This week in 1948, the National Party won the general election in South Africa and quickly sought to implement its policy of apartheid. The Communist Party of South Africa, banned by the regime in 1950, strongly opposed the new government led by D.F. Malan and compared them to the Nazis.
