I've done it. I hope my brain will find peace now.
I don't think my brain will be free until I fully articulate in analytical form how I feel about the book I read. My brain refuses to critically chew on anything else until I expel this demon out of me
Substack user: As you can see, this much younger woman posted kinky art and sexy selfies online. Therefore she must've consented.
Gaiman: Now THIS is journalistic integrity!!
Gaiman recently gave a shoutout to a substack user for meticulously doing research to prove his innocence re: the allegations.
I've now read a good bunch of those articles. Not only are they badly and condescendingly written, but they come off like the writer has no idea how abuse works at all.
I am not kidding. There is a part where the substack user tries to argue that a queer woman saying "I'm gay" to Gaiman's advances doesn't count as saying no.
This person is trying to 4d chess their way around consent by being the most dense and obtuse investigator I've ever seen.
Substack user: Hmm. She may identify as a lesbian, and anyone can, but she has been in relationships with men so-
Oh I'm sorry, was the victim of abuse not gold star enough for you??

"oh you were happy one time? You like being around the powerful person who manipulated you? You said "yes" even though he controls the situation? You feel bad and miss him? I don't see any abuse here!"
Condescending as hell.
Oh the writer also falls for the "Gaiman advocates for the marginalized, so maybe these allegations are motivated by tearing a good trans ally down" angle that so many men in power use to scare their victims from speaking up. These kind of men like touting their feminism for a reason, dude.

My challenge for adding something to a collection branded in celebration of supes 2025 was to find an angle where I could critique my problems with the film through a short story.
So I tackled how despite the film's supposed anti-war messaging, it doesn't treat the victims of war like characters
No one's out here making fan art or fan fiction about the jarhanpurians. Supes 2025 focuses on how Americans feel about their suffering. The film even forgets this because it lacks real focus on conflict outside of building a brand around Superman. By every measure, it fails as an anti-war film
Through a character who acts as my narrative jarhanpurian-equivalent, I used this short comic to vent about how you can identify with- and also be so frustrated by a reflection of yourself. It's about watching the marginalized assimilate into power.
My hope is that as supes 2025 ages badly with every new word from its director and the DCU's close creative ties to a former cia agent, this comic will only become more relevant. It's a little space to be frustrated by American symbols of justice.
Everything I do, I do for the peanut sauce
One of the best things my first seqa prof ever taught me was to treat bad and mediocre art with the same analytical respect as a masterpiece. You can learn so much from bad things, and artists who don't take the time to critically engage with it are doomed to repeat the very things they mocked.
I've been so inspired by Big Joel's analytical ability to consider different readings of art, including ones that weren't intended by the artist who made it. In an era where people get so moralistic about ANY discussion of problematic art, he's out here critically dissecting boy in striped pj's
I'm fascinated by the middling reviews for Iron Lung I'm seeing so far. I do have my reservations on where markiplier is currently at as a creative and I think he's very aware of those limitations. The guy gave himself a premise a seasoned director would find challenging, and he did that as a debut!
There's always a level of camp and "it's an elaborate ARG with in-jokes and lore" that comes with his Youtube choose your own adventure projects. So it's hard to judge what Mark's capable of when crafting something from the ground up via self contained adaptation.
