- Maybe there is something to learn from other states where people continue to resist and push back against authoritarianism, even if authoritarian gvts keep coming back. In 2021 I published a book about a comparison of Skorea, Peru, and Uruguay and transitional justice.
- Main argument is that cotinuous advocacy efforts involving domestic and international partners (i.e., transnational advocacy involving ngos and what not) can make a difference. That it is the only way to resist/help halt authoritarian governments and protect the average citizen and human rights.

- For the first time in sk history, a president in office is arrested. President Yoon waited out too long and the bad optics are unfortunately on him. Now the "fake elections" and "unfair elections" rhetoric about past congressional elections is being brought fwd once again by Yoon. Crisis.
- Meanwhile in Sk, a mess takinf place with arrest warrants issued... by Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials. Originally, the case was w the police. Then, COI takes it from the police.
- COI gets the arrest warrant issued against Yoon by the Seoul Western District Court. But, they fail to arrest Yoon. COI asks input from police. Originally, police deny aid. Then, in the end they agree to jointly carry out the arrest.
- There are lots of political baggage here, for instance the creation of COI and the court issuing the order and what not. But, it does not matter. President Yoon has to understand that he made a grave mistake w martial law, has been impeached, and will need to face the consequences.
- Optics looks terrible for Yoon. To "save face," he must voluntarily show up to the police (before a forced/tug of war photo moment of Yoon being dragged out splashes across all major media outlets in the world).

- Sk's airplane accident has multiple issues to take into consideration. 1. Muan international airport was not all functional for intl flights 2. Jeju air is a small company, not a bad track record but it seems the pilot was desperate 3. Runway at the airport was significantly shorter than others
- 4. This will become a politicized matter, given the dynamics of SK politics. But, it is now that we have to call off the politics, and instead think about and pay respect to those who lost their families.

- With impeachment through, Minister of Economics Choi Sang Mok assumes acting role as president of SK. Should the trend for impeachment continue, governance will be quite tumultuous until the Const Tribunal makes their decisions (which they said they can do even w 6 justices, but still debated)
- SK Political scientists are comparing Sk to Peru. Not the same. In Peru our impeachment is swift, there is no "acting" president. We have votes to swear in an interim president. Thus, we had numerous presidents not "acting ones..."
- As Han DS PM serving as president of SK announces that he will not recognize the 3 nominations put fwd in the national assembly for the constitutional tribunal, the opposition party presents another impeachment proposal, now against Han DS. More political turmoil in the SK.

- Const Tribunal makes exception and agrees that they can deliberate without having the 7th justice. So, 6 justices will start deliberation about the impeachment.
- A task force also set up to make sure this is completely legal and covers all grounds.
- Han DH resigns from Yoon's party. Nothing surprising as Han is extremely disliked by Yoon and the first lady, and w the buildup of tensions w/in the party, this is an expected outcome.

- Impeached! Yoon's presidential power immediately halted. PM Han DS takes power. 12 from Yoon's party vote in favor of impeachment. Cons. Tribunal has 180 days to make a decision. Due to the lack of voting members, it looks like a rushed appointment process of a judge will take place w/in a month.
- Then, if the tribunal agrees to this decision, within 60 days from the tribunal's decision presidential elections will take place.

- Chatted with some academics on the SK case. Among citizens who normally vote/side with the more conservative agenda of the state, many are separating themselves from Yoon's presidency. They note, what is wrong is wrong. Yoon crossed the line by declaring martial law. So, why is Yoon so unapologetic?
- This is because there is an utra-conservative citizenry that believes in ultra-conservative/right-wing conspiracy theories, also known as the "flag troops" 태극기 부대, and are still supporting Yoon. But, the more "conscious" conservatives are aligning against him.
- There are also reports that Yoon may have acted the way he did due to his alcoholism. The inability to "reason," is what some are reporting as an extension of alcohol addiction. www.hani.co.kr/arti/english...
-
View full threadOne thing is clear. By declaring martial law, Yoon reversed the course of Sk's democratic progress, and eroded the SK's position (and pol. stability) in the world stage. If you want balanced news coverage, read Hankyoreh (Left-leaning) and Chosun (Right-leaning) together.
- Optics are everything in politics. Yoon is clearly not helping himself. As I mentioned previously, should impeachment go through, the voting number situation of the const tribunal will need to be somehow accomodated. As it stands, the cons tribunal cannot vote.
- 11am KST, statement to the nation will be delivered by the PM and Han DH from Yoon's party. Han is the one who is at complete odds with Yoon. They will discuss how Yoon will be stripped of governing power and how they plan to move the country fwd given this current political crisis.
- Breaking news. Defense minister arrested
- People, one thing to also consider is that should impeachment go through, then the constitutional tribunal needs to make the final decision. But to do so, they need more than 6 justices weighing in. But, due to the opposition party opposing for a while, the const tribunal only has 6 justices serving
- So, if the constitutional tribunal makes a decision, it is unconstitutional. So thus, the reason why impeachment presents another instability for the state.
- Yoon survives for now. Impeachment vote in limbo. 6 from the opposition party in favor, but others in Yoon's party maintained the party line (to not impeachment, which does not mean they favor Yoon but likely they are waiting on his resignation) and walked out of the national assembly.
- But, 6 from Yoon's party brome the party line and are in favor of impeachment. To save this crisis, I would say Yoon needs to resign (his party needs to pressure him further), election time frame needs to be set, and a precedent for resignation has to be set (so that this is not repeated).
- Things need to settle down politically for the people to feel calm, and the currency to stabilize again.
- Closer reading of Yoon's speech. His specific language was that everything will be taken care of by his party. Not direct "resignation," but he may be making room for the resignation by suggestion of party. If this were to occur the PM will take office.
