- #comicsky #booksky #filmsky The comic book ‘Watchmen’ is a serious work, for sure, but its visual gags make it great fun as well. Some folks have their gripes about the movie adaptation, as do I, but today I wanted to focus on something a little silly. Nite Owl II’s mask.
- It’s not often spoken about, and why would it be? It’s kind of awkward. Dan Dreiberg’s mask in the comic book clearly outlines the shape of a penis. By itself, it’s a bit juvenile however Dave Gibbons provides an amazing joke for eagle eyed viewers in the comic book later on…Jan 26, 2026 12:59
- In issue 7, we focus on Dan and Laurie. They become sexually intimate with one another, or rather they try but unfortunately Dan’s impotence gets in the way.
- Later though, Dan and Laurie embark on an adventure as Nite Owl and Silk Spectre, and putting on the costume awakens the beast in Dan.
- Did you see it? Focus on the background of the previous picture. What do we see? Dan’s mask is upside down, and we can see 5 little lines popping out of it. Dan is no longer impotent! And Gibbons give us a great gag to boot.
- Now what exactly is the point of Dan’s mask being a penis? I’m really not sure. Maybe it’s as simple as “Dan is a dick.” After all, he goes along with the cover up and even before that we can see little things.
- For instance, Dan is rich. His supposed mentor is Hollis Mason and yet as we see in issue 8, Hollis barely has any money to make a phone call. Why aren’t you helping your mentor, Dan? At least toss him some phone money for crying out loud.
- Regardless, a truly missed opportunity for the film. Patrick Wilson in dickface could’ve been amazing. Cheers!
