So far, Republicans would rather shut down the government. So Americans face flight delays, reduced services, and mounting economic damage.
It's time for Trump and Republicans to change course on health care and reopen the government.
Dear NYC:

How are the MAGAs liking Musk today? 😂 We agree the bill is an abomination, but don’t get it twisted, Musk. It only took an international boycott to get you to change your tune. We’re still boycotting you. We haven’t forgotten. Foxtrot Echo Mike.
When something in the news makes me furious, I see if there's something I can *do*, even if it's as small as spending on time on books they don't want us reading or writing. (author friends, join @authorsabb.bsky.social, publisher friends get involved w/ anti book banning efforts in your houses!)
I didn’t give a wit about new pope coverage, but the first American pope being a man with Black ancestry born in Chicago by way of New Orleans by way of Haiti. Names his self after the pope who condemned slavery? In the Trump era? Oh, baebae, I am HERE for it.

Took 5 min today and whipped up simple designs in Canva. Sized to fix 2 x 4" and 1 x 1 5/8" mailing labels. Print them by the sheet and stick them up: lampposts, parking meters, sidewalks. (Just don't be a jerk.)
Remind people this isn't normal & they're not alone, and encourage them to act.
Anna Julia Cooper was an author, educator, sociologist, speaker, Black liberation activist, Black feminist leader, and one of the most prominent scholars in United States history. She was born enslaved, and yet became the fourth Black woman to ever earn a PhD. #BlackHistoryMonth
Letters went out to federal workers this morning stating they were fired due to poor performance. However, all employees had been rated as “exceptional” performers by their supervisors. Please keep these records and pursue wrongful termination claims. Let the lawsuits begin.
I can think of no more important insight for our times than that of Audre Lorde: "My silences had not protected me.
Your silence will not protect you."
Despite being "socialized to respect fear more than our own
needs for language and definition," she concludes that "it is not difference which immobilizes us, but silence. And there are so many silences to be broken." Such an important insight in the struggle against fascism. ❤️✊

Public education is the backbone of American democracy.
In the richest country in the history of the world, we cannot abandon our teachers and our public schools.
“If you are in a blue state or a Democratic district, you need to push your representatives to engage the battle relentlessly, to “leave no power on the table,” and to use all of the tools available to them to resist.” sherrilyn.substack.com/p/democracy-... 2/2
There is so much right now. You can't do everything. But you don't have to. There are a lot of us and we are going to share the load. We make progress *together*.
Ask yourself honestly: what can I do to help TODAY? Then do it. Tomorrow, try to do a little more.
You got this. ❤️👊
So weary, and yet I just helped a couple of students find information on food insecurity and it felt so good. Less good was letting them know that some sites for data run by the us gov might be down while they purge language like "inclusion" from their websites. (sigh)
Here is a script you can use for any issue. Find your reps' # at reps.fyi or 5calls.org. Every time you see a news story that horrifies you: call, or something else about it. It matters to say what you believe. You are setting a norm.
When educators organize alongside parents, caregivers, and students their collective power can dismantle divisions and build a future where justice, truth, and education belong to everyone.

Went looking for a recorded version of this talk, delighted that @humrespro.bsky.social had it! I saw Carla give a version of it recently. When a student asked last night "how do I teach with more gentleness?" it's what I thought of immediately. Recommended to all.
